Bill440cars: Thanks for the nice words about my old roadster.
I had this Corvette for a few years and did a little restoration work on it. I sold it in 2009 and now it is cruising the streets of Copenhagen, Denmark.

I bought this old '48 Mercury for $75 from my older brother in 1956 when I was 14. I removed all the chrome from the fenders and also the nose and deck lid. I sanded it and masked it and a local body shop painted it for $45 and if I remember right that included the paint.  That was a good old car all through high school. I don't know if anybody remembers them, but the whitewalls on there were phony. They were just a ring that fit between the rim and the tire. The one on the right rear split and was thrown off.

i remember those sort of flappy white wall fakes, those prices you mention sound unreal today but back in the day those were real hard to save bucks.

Hey listen, I enjoyed hearing about the, myself and it sounds like something I'd like to have been able to do. Too bad about that rod that decided to depart.  :-\   I put this thread on here, because I like to see pictures of and hear about the cars (and trucks) as well. I thank you for sharing.  ;)

Hey that's a cool old Mercury and I enjoyed hearing about that one as well.   8)
And I, also, remember those fake white walls. I have to say that I HAD forgotten about those, but as soon as you mentioned them, I remembered them as well. There were also Dummy Teardrop spotlights and angled rear radio antennas, that were fake. Things like that, helped those who couldn't afford the real ones and still have a cool look about them.  ;)

I forget the brand names they were sold under, but a common term or name was Port-a-wall for the add-on whitewalls. They are again available through advertisers in the kustom kulture style magazines, and always have been through diehards like JC Whitney. JCW prolly still stocks some unique items for our SOHC4 bikes...

Bill440, It is indeed a wedge. Their lettering on the fender says "426ci. No, It's not a hemi" They've run the cross ram successfully for a few years now, even winning a Wally in their class. In the past, I think they've even played with the long ram, but just for kicks before they got serious about NHRA division points. Good bunch of folks getting better and better at what they have fun doing.

I didn't notice the "426" on the fender, til you pointed it out and looked back to see it. The Long Ram is really vintage stuff and really got your attention when you popped the hood. I mean with a Four barrel carb sitting over each valve cover, you can't miss that.  ;)  Some folks automatically think HEMI, when 426 is mentioned and don't know about the Fantastic Big Block Wedges (like the 413 Max Wedge putting out 420hp). That's really Great to hear about them (the cars AND the folks).  ;)   Thanks for posting.  8)

heres my 68 monaro, being guarded by my mate with i think my mossberg 12g pump, this was at a dump at castlemaine/victoria about 79?it has the later 71 grille and was only the two barrel 186 cube straight six from the factory with the pathetic opel four speed,i had the obligatory extended rear shackles, the 192 cube over bore with holley 500 two barrel with saginaw four speed and massive head and cam so it wouldnt idle, vacuum guage and grille mounted driving lights(spot lights),these are worth a fortune here now like about 30 grand plus for a good six banger,,let alone a factory 307 with glide,,327 or 350 chev optioned one with muncie etc, these were beasts, the v8 options became the actual holden 253 or 308 cubic inch engine along with the chev 350,the chevs got discontinued about 76 and the 308 became the performance engine.,we never got your yank crappy smog stuff untill years later,,we missed out on air pumps for a start, all our new cars got egr and heated manifolds with temp controlled kickdown and advance etc through he 80s/early 90s

i bought this car for 1750 and sold it for about 1900 2 years later after all the time and money i put into it=dumbass!that was the going price in the day.
