On another subject: I've seen some Cafe builds that begin with a bike that has nothing wrong with it in the first place, and I don't get that. I really like the cafe look, but if it is a classic that is full stock, and in nice working order, then why not keep it that way?
That's why I went with a beater, because no matter what you do, it will end up looking better than it did... Hopefully! Haha.
Does that bug anyone else? Maybe I'm in the minority here.

I understand the idea.  most times the guys who change a bike to a cafe do it reasonably well. The ones that usally drive me nuts are the guys who want the "bobber" look so they toss the stock seat bolt on some retarded springer seat and drop the rear end with struts. Then chop the rear fender and bolt on the closest trailer light you have lying around.

Oh and obviously you must paint it flat black.



and trust me us bobber guys feel the same way about every person on here building stupid cafe racers, and they all look the same too. just let people enjoy what they enjoy and ride man. no need to be rude about it.



This is not a bobber... A bobber is a bike who has springs underneath the seat and is hard-tailed.. Making the only suspension being that under your butt, not that crap where you cut up a frame a little bit slap a piece of leather on it and keep the rear shocks.

The gas tank, emblems, front fairing, side covers, and rear fender have all been painted. They look great! I got my friend Mat who works at a shop to get me a great deal. He was going to do it himself, but due to a deadline I wanted it done by, the project got passed off. The color I ended up going with is what Ford calls Metallic Shadow Gray. At first I wanted to use Ducati Titanium, but I didn't want to pay for expensive PPG paint, so I went for something I liked that was kind of similar. I don't have pics of the tins yet. I was busy at the time, when I got them (at my wedding).

I've been sitting on some other photos for a while now, and I actually need to take some new ones. Sorry, I'll try to post some eye candy real soon.

Still working out some bugs with the transmission before the cases go together. I know almost all '77 and '78 CB750F parts are the same, but I wasn't sure about the transmission. Does anyone know if the transmission/ gear ratios are the same on these bikes? I found a good used transmission from a 77 CB750F to use for my '78, but I wanted to double check.

Going by Bikebandits parts fiche the part numbers for the transmission parts match between the 77F & 78F schematics, so I guess I found the answer.

Yeah, they are. I had them printed in white plastic due to price, but they offer other materials as well. They charge by the cubic centimeter, and these were about $30 a piece. They have more texture than I expected, but can be sanded. They have been painted to match the tank, but I don't have pics of that yet.

Rims you say? Here you go. Painted black with a polished lip. The little Honda plastic badges are red to match the frame.

Here is some artwork I did for my friend buddy Aaron who is helping me on the bike. I went for an Ed Roth kind of look on the style. He hopes to open a shop called Metric Mayhem, so that's where I came up with the name for this bike. The tank badges logo is actually the logo I created for him. Hopefully we will get some window stickers made up soon.

More photos.

This was pretty boogered up, and had to be repaired. It won't be perfect, but after its painted black who cares.


Needed to be JB welded on the inside just in case.


Old paint removed, and ready to be painted.


Lots of black paint and powder coating:










New speedo and tach with built in LED cluster. Originally wanted white faces, but it wasn't available in the tach at the time.


I got a free viper fairing, but the windscreen was all scuffed up. I used a headlight restoration kit, but I got better results with buffing/polishing compound and Meguiars scratch X 2.0 to bring back the shine. The fairing has been painted to match the tins.

Thanks. That windscreen took a lot of elbow grease to get all the scratches and most of swirl marks out. I used 600 grit on the deep scratches and then used 2000 wet on the entire windscreen. I tried using a headlight restore kit to finish it, but it still left swirl marks everywhere. The Meguiars scratch x 2.0 worked very well though. I'd recommend it to someone.

Thanks Larry. I was really glad I chose to have it redone in the powder coat. I liked the color of the enamel paint, but it seemed to chip fairly easily.

I will be going with K&N oval style pod filters on the bike. I'm hoping that these will work really well with the added cc's and yoshi style exhaust.





The oil pump is in great condition, but will be getting new o-rings.





Here is a photo of the donor transmission.




I also picked up a steering damper off ebay. It is 6 step adjustable, and I hope it works well.

I know Mick! I just read that whole thread earlier this week, and it made me wish I had waited on buying a set of filters... At least the K&N's are much cheaper, so that makes me feel better.

After almost four years, off and on, this build will be completed in a month or so, hopefully. In a couple of weeks we are going to get try and get it started for the first time. I think the only parts I have left to purchase is a couple of master cylinder rebuilt kits. Just about everything else is ready to go and be put together. I will be taking lots of photos and some video.
