a question. i have the desire to learn to play bluegrass fiddle and of course i'm not going to go out and buy something high buck, german and old. what is the quality like on the cheaper (100-150 dollars) fiddles. i know that cheap guitars have gotten to be quite good over the past several years (most expensive guitar i own is a Danelectro Hodad and thats because it's on the rare side)

Hi Bucky,
Here is a list of jams in SC. They usually welcome guitar, banjo, mando and dobro.
You could probably get a head start learning tunes on your guitar:

You also may find a fiddle for sale that you can listen to first.
That's really the only way to know what you're getting.
Mike

a friend and i have played at Bills Pickin Parlor over in west columbia a few times. we did some Garcia Grisman stuff

The viola strings are CGDA. Notice that it is tuned in fifths, CdefGabcDefgA.
Counting the C, there are five notes to the next string.
The bass, cello, viola, and violin are all tuned in fifths.

so is a cello GDAC and then the base at DACG?

The fiddle/violin is usually tuned G-D-A-E, where the G is below middle C on the piano.

A viola is C-G-D-A , The C is one octave below middle C, a perfect fifth below the violin. The G-D-A strings on a violin and a viola are the same, in the same octave.

A cello is tuned, low to high, C-G-D-A, the same as a viola but an octave lower. The C is two octaves below middle C on a piano.

Double basses are usually tuned in fourths, low to high, E-A-D-G, which is one octave lower than the four lowest-pitch strings on a guitar. That's the lowest E on a piano.
X= an unknown quantity

Although I play cornet with a Brass Band and generally prefer classical music, I thought that video of the Quebe Sisters was great and really enjoyable.
