There are plenty of people on here who know more about these bikes than I do but I'll give it a shot. We recently bought a '69 and a '72 CL350 and they are mostly the same bike through the years. As far as I can tell, the engines are the same through out the years and they are the same as the CB models. The forks are different. Of course, the exhausts are definitely different between the CL and CB. Within the CLs though, my '69 exhaust looks different than the '72 but it will bolt up the same as far as I can tell. The side covers are slightly different with vents added in the later models but they still fit the same. By far though, the biggest difference is the seat. The '69 seat flips up front to back, the '72 seat flips to the side. I think it changed at the '70 to the 71 model but one of the guys can verify that. The other thing I have found is on my '69, the front brake cable is different. It has a wire coming off of it to trigger the taillight. The '72 has a separate wire coming out of the switch pod. I can't get the '69 brake cable anymore. If I can't find one on ebay at some point, I will have to change my right pod to a later model and run the wire separate. Keep this in mind if you need switch pods.

Oh, the rear light changed a bit but will fit to the bracket either way as far as I know. Also, the idiot lights changed the last year to a setup between the clocks. Ours have them in the clocks.

There may be other things, but that's all I can think of right now. Very interchangeable though. Just not the seats so much.

Hope that helps. :)

Internal motor parts may have the same part numbers but the rockers and a few other items are different for weight and/or strength on the '68-'69 models.

thanks mickeyx for the insight. basically i've been collecting parts and i'm going to try to piece something together. i have everything off a 72 cb350 except the frame and engine. then the other day i picked up the 69 cl350 in the photo. everything is there except a title. so now i'm on a hunt for just a titled frame to build up. as long as the frames and engines are compatible, i can make it work. one thing i noticed is the 69 cl tank is much shorter than the cb 350 tanks i have. i did notice that the cl seat flips up, just like you said. i'm a cb550 guy, so this is a whole new thing for me. i started cleaning the tank too. the spray paint comes right off with goo-gone.

interesting.  based on what you just said, are certain years of 350 engines "better" than others? can you confirm that any CB/CL frame and engine are interchange able?

Goo gone? Dude you just made my day. ;D Someone rattle canned my green tank and I was looking at having to strip it totally down. I may try this 1st just to see what is under that green.  8)

I've noticed a small cross brace on the '72 compared to my '69 where the front of the seat meets the frame. Not sure how that would affect changing up seats or tanks. My CL tank is definitely shorter than my CB/SS sized tank that came on the bike. Seat lengths are different too to accomodate the fit. The seat tucks up over the CL tank more.

As far as I know you should be able to put any CB/CL350 engine into any CB/CL350 frame.

actually i used "goof off". it takes a whole 16oz can and a ton of soft rags. i did it with a 550 super sport tank first, and it turned out great.

here's before and after:

Yes, the motors and frames are interchangeable, including the 1st-year SL model.
