It's supposed to go passed the point of maximum height because that is how it stabilizes itself.  If the stand stood straight up, it wouldn't hold the bike up.

Do you have short shocks or lowering blocks installed?  Those would cause this.

how does the contact area where the stand reaches its position look?it might be worn or bent somewhere.,letting the stand travel further.

If it is going past vertical, too far, the footpedal will actually touch the ground. Is that happening? If so you are correct its too much. The footpedal should not be touching the ground with the stand in full parked position.

The stand has two substantial contact points on itself. Unlikely they are a problem. But the frame cross tube they contact, and which then acts as the "stop" is subject to collapse if it has been abused ie: overloaded bike on the centerstand, people sitting on the bike while on the stand etc. Ordinarily the frame cross tube can handle it. But if its rusted from the inside or just otherwise a fluke, it can collapse and let the stand go to far.

This is a dangerous condition as it can let go and the bike can fall pinning you or worse.  Hopefully I'm off base and its something else. Possibly in the pivot tube.

Good luck, let us know.
