Broken pressure plate
« on: January 06, 2006, 07:29:15 PM »
I'm not sure what I did wrong but after making sure the "steels" were all in the right direction as per the article in the tech library about clutchs I buttoned up the clutch as usual, put the springs in and tightened up the clutch lifter plate so the bolts bottomed. I could not  get the clutch to work at the lever so undid it again. It's like the shaft to release the clutch was not making contact with the centre of the clutch. I removed the lifter plate again, everything looked ok so I put the springs in and tightened up the bolts again and CRACK goes the pressure plate with one finger broken off! Do these die of old age or am I missing something here? I did the bolts up carefully so not to bend the lifter plate, the pressure plate seemed to be loose in the basket when I started.
Any help out there please?
Any pressure plates for sale out there?
Not so cheerful,
Cliff. ??? :(

Good morning Sam,
I probably should have put my post following yours but no one seem to have broken anything. I'll check out the clutch again this morning and go to my local salvager to sse if I can score another pressure plate. The sad thing is that the clutch worked ok before I took it apart. I did have a problem with the adjustment when I put it back togethher a short while ago but it cleared up - I really don't know what I did to "fix" it. I just enjoy tinkering with the bike and found the article on clutchs and steel direction. Sure enough I had a few steels facing the wrong direction. Something about being anal I guess.
Maybe it would be best to wait for someone to post their solution to this issue before diving in again?
Cheers,
Cliff.

yes, 1971 CB750. Thanks for the offer! I'm off to the salvage yard to see what they have.
"Anal" I'm not sure that's the right spelling but it describes someone who is so much of a perfectionist about things that they can be a pain in the butt. My friends swear I'm that way but I'm not so sure. One has named me Magpie because of my habit of collecting and hoarding shiny things.
One thing I did find odd when I was playing with the clutch is that when I had the clutch together I could put the bike in gear and spin the rear wheel so that the clutch would turn but not the motor. It wouldn't come up against the compression of the motor like when you park the bike in gear and it won't roll forward. Maybe the pressure plate was hung up and not compressing the disks enough. When I tightened up the bolts it finally snapperd off the finger/pin on the plate. I also had the same problem as others with the clutch not releasing properly. These were probably clues I missed that I hadn't put the thing together correctly?
Cheers,
Cliff.

cd811, my mind does kind of wander to that area at times, especially when the young ladies in my office walk by!
I managed to score 2 pressure plates at the salvager so thanks again for your generous offer and I MAY have stumbled acroos what's happening to the clutch causing these problems - the pressure plate and clutch centre may not be lining up right.  The pressure plate has "grooves" in it on it;s circumfrence that the splines on the clutch centre are to slide into. If the plate and centre are not lined up right the centre will actually sit on top of the plate and not engage the grooves.
I'll  include a couple of pictures.
What this does is in effect shorten the 'fingers on the pressure plate and lengthen the space between the lips of the centre and plate. Two things happen then: first the clutch lifter plate sits way down in the centre so when you bolt it down the springs are compressed much more putting huge strain in the pressure plate fingers (and maybe breaking them) and the clutch release can't work properly because the pin can't reach the centre to disengage the clutch, secondly the pressure plate can't compress the plates enough to work properly.
When the clutch centre sits in the pressure plate all is right!
Solution, before installing the clutch be sure that the two pieces meld together. If not keep placing the centre over the pressure plate until they do and put a mark on the centre near a post and mark that post too. When assemblig make sure as well that the lifter plate is not "sunk" into the centre.
You guys may be way ahead of me on this one too.

Thanks!
I want to do another 750. I'm addicted to the sound of them
I bought the 750 new in '71 so I had a bit of a headstart on most people here I think.
I have a bunch of parts but need lots more to make up another bike - a FrankenHonda I think.
Cheers,
Cliff.

take a look, click on this....http://www.mypages.co.nz/~andyf/Honda.htm

Then click on....take me to the CR750 project bike.  1st pic on left.

THAT'S YOURS!!??  How great is that bike? Looks awesome. How ironic is this, I've been looking at Andy's pages for years for inspiration and how to's for years. He's helped bring the bike to what it is today and so have you then. Thanks!

The bike is built, and has completed 3 seasons drag racing in the classic class.
