cd811, my mind does kind of wander to that area at times, especially when the young ladies in my office walk by!
I managed to score 2 pressure plates at the salvager so thanks again for your generous offer and I MAY have stumbled acroos what's happening to the clutch causing these problems - the pressure plate and clutch centre may not be lining up right. The pressure plate has "grooves" in it on it;s circumfrence that the splines on the clutch centre are to slide into. If the plate and centre are not lined up right the centre will actually sit on top of the plate and not engage the grooves.
I'll include a couple of pictures.
What this does is in effect shorten the 'fingers on the pressure plate and lengthen the space between the lips of the centre and plate. Two things happen then: first the clutch lifter plate sits way down in the centre so when you bolt it down the springs are compressed much more putting huge strain in the pressure plate fingers (and maybe breaking them) and the clutch release can't work properly because the pin can't reach the centre to disengage the clutch, secondly the pressure plate can't compress the plates enough to work properly.
When the clutch centre sits in the pressure plate all is right!
Solution, before installing the clutch be sure that the two pieces meld together. If not keep placing the centre over the pressure plate until they do and put a mark on the centre near a post and mark that post too. When assemblig make sure as well that the lifter plate is not "sunk" into the centre.
You guys may be way ahead of me on this one too.
