What Gauges and ignition do I have?
« on: January 26, 2010, 03:27:36 pm »
I'm helping a friend sell some parts and I haven't been able to identify what model these gauges are from. I thought there used to be a gauge FAQ or something on the main website? Based on the redline, I think they're from some cb550 model but I'm not sure.

I also have this ignition switch and bracket. It has the round connector so I think this means it's earlier? Based on the bracket, I don't think it's from a sohc4. Any ideas?

The switch (and bracket) resembles CB/CL450. It will also work on a CB750K0-K2, if the owner does not use a halogen headlight. The contacts inside the switch are only rated 10 amps, where normal CB750 units are 12 amp contacts.

It might also fit the CB500, if the connector matches.

Changing the connector will let it fit lots of Hondas.  ;)

Gauges: the redline makes them appear to be 1975 and later CB750F.

The speedo looks like the one from my 1976 CB550F1, as it has the tripmeter reset knob facing forward (which let in moisture) instead of on the side like I had on my 1977 CB550F2 and my later CB550K3. The green on the background was lighter on the earlier model than the later, and seemed to fade quite easily.

Yoshi, I think you just solved a different mystery that I have here: a 1975 CB750F1 with a light green tach (and broken needle). I could not figure out where that tach came from: I think you've nailed it.

Now to find a 750F1 tach...

Thanks!

The tach red line would seem like a CB550, either 74 or 75, based on the speedometer number/label style.  If you take the tach out of the cup, it should be stamped with a ratio.  That will determine if it is 750 or 550.  I think the 750 uses 1:4  2500 rpm in, indicates 10000 on the dial.  I can't remember offhand what the 550 is.  But, I know it is different.

Is this stamping on the inside of the tach, TT? Or, is it just insideof the chromed holder?

It's on the back of the Tach, apparently only some of them.  You have to take it out of the chrome holder to see it.

I've got a 76 CB750 tach that has the stamping.  And, I looked at three 550 tachs in the parts bin: 2 don't have the stamp and 1 did Face looks like the one in the picture above, and the stamp reads "1500rpm indicates 10000rpm").  I know there are stampings on some of the 550 tachs I have installed.

Anyway, the red begins at 9250 on the 550.  Is the 750F1 9250 or 9450 like on my 77 750F3?
