Hey fellers, how often do You check your oil?  do you add with regularity?
I know this sounds like a novice question but I have been so busy lately that I have not checked it for awhile, well it wasn't dry but damn near it.  :-[

Once a week with regular use.  When you top off...

DON'T OVER FILL!!!

Blasty,
Is it a 750? (sorry i can't remeber what you ride)
I check the header tank every week, or two if I am not riding much. I also check underneath, my bike does not drop any oil at present! this can be a guide to topping up.
I have been wondering how to gauge the topping up as there is not a reliable dip stick method?
Also, do you do it when the bike is running and the oil has gone from the header tank, do you do it when not running and bike is hot, or when the bike is cold?? Someone please let me know which one, my manual does not specify.
Jim.

Regardless of how frequently you check, when you do, do it right after a ride (assuming 750 here) so the oil tank is at its highest level in case your bike suffers from wet sumping, like mine  :(. Otherwise the oil level might appear low, you add some, and ultimately end up with too much oil in the system.

Right after your next ride, check the oil level in the tank (on center stand preferably). Let is sit for several days, then check the oil level again. If it is lower, it's wet sumping. Mine has improved some after a good cleaning of the oil pump assembly, but still does it, but more slowly than in the past.

Ah, that makes sense, cheers.
Was your wet sumping due to a faulty 'non return valve'?
Jim.

Jim,

Should have added, if you really want to know if you have this issue, even if it seems OK now (winter months) it might be worth repeating the test during the summer when the oil will be thinner for longer periods after a ride. I've noticed a difference, based on the season, in terms of the leak-down rate on my bike.

As to the cause, could be a number of things. Bad rubber seal on the end of the valve piston. Mine appeared OK, but might be old and stiff (like me  ;D), or a piece of debris stuck to the face (not my problem), OR as someone here mentioned some time ago, valve cylinder walls may have become glazed and de-glazing might help. Unfortunately, this recommendation came up after I had reassembled everything so I didn't do that. More recently someone indicated the piston or seal might still be available as a parts order. When I looked about a year or so ago, I wasn't able to find one. I'll research this some more.

You remember, that 2-5 day period when you get to wear a wool shirt instead of a down parka.  ;D

I'll trade you wet for cold.  We're looking at week #3 of rain.  I'm thinking of greasing up like a channel swimmer and taking the supersport out for a dip.

I agree, cold is ok, wet is not. I wouldn't even want to ride a modern bike in the wet!!

ok.  How does it do harm to overfill a cb750 oil tank with oil

isn't the oil just pumped out of the tank, into the engine, and back into the holding tank?
Wouldn't any excess oil just sit in the tanlk between trips to and from the engine?
Isn't this how a dry sump system works?

Am I totally confused about this?

Set me straight, please.  ???

Adam,
It doesn't harm the bike, the problem is that the overfill may be ejected from the engine from the overflow pipe; you do not want a lot of oil spraying out when you are riding!!
Jim.
