my new toy s90 content
« on: January 27, 2010, 03:27:19 AM »
well honda s90 that is.  Just picked this up at an auction this afternoon.  IT has no paperwork and no keys.  But it does kick over nicely and is complete.

so my plans are to clean it up and get it running, then work on getting papers.

onto the pics

anyone know how to tell the year form the seriel?  or any other way?

My current S90 project is frame #560393 and is titled as a 1966. Frame and engine numbers are very important when looking for parts. S90s had MANY variations and some parts are interchangable, but many are not. A lot are still available from Honda. Honda Parts Nation is a very good parts source as well as Western Hills Honda. Can use Cycle Parts' website as an interchange manual. Look up part on system, then enter on parts search. Will give all models using that part number. Example: Brake switch spring interchanges with a CB750A and the panhead screws are used up to the GL1000. Guard those plastic air cleaner side covers!

Nice acquisition!  It should look really nice when all done up.

BTW my younger brother had one in 1965 as his first bike.  We traded-in my Super Cub for it when I went off to university.  He thought he had a "real" motorcycle until I came back the next spring with my newly acquired Super Hawk.  ;D ;D ;D

Outstanding!  Great looking project.  Keep us updated.

But, IMHO, you've got the order wrong - get the paperwork, THEN spend time and money.  :)

Hi Steve
I would guess 1966 based on the frame number. There is/was a tag on the wiring harness about were it comes out of the frame on it's way to the headlight bucket that has the date of manufacture of the harness on it. Add six months to a year to that date.

Stock is 2.50 X 18 front and rear (80/90 metric) Some use 2.75 on rear but 2.75 on front looks kind of fat. Chain is 100 link 525.

Hey guys,

I have some S90 "odds n ends" from a 66, one fork, a mostly complete frame, headlight shell, speedo, engine bits etc, etc.

Let me know if there is something you're missing and I'll check the stash.

That is a later model. Mine is a 1966 and has a VIN # S904788xx. Also, if you'll note in the black bike's photo, the air cleaner cover on the right side does not have the cut-out for the side-mounted carb's adjustment screw. The early models (I think all 1965 and 1966) had the curved manifold that put the carb at the right side on the airbox as shown in this pic of my all original bike. The 1967 and later ones had the straight manifolds that positioned the carburetor in the middle of the box.

Note my avitar - the S90 is my very first real motorcycle and despite the fact it's shrank over the years (it did I swear it), I'll never forget the fun I had on that first one.

Regards,
Gordon

Hi Ilbikes
A 1966 Honda super90 does not have an offset carburetor.
Hi grumburg
What sprockets are you using with the 525 chain?

called a dealer to see if they could verify the year.

they called me back about 2 hours later and told me that all he could find is that if the fenders are painted its a pre-68.

Hi Steve
The change occurred at #640505. Not only was the fender chromed the method of mounting was changed.
Honda did not really do model years on these bikes. My guess is that the year that there were actually sold is what went on the title. So a Super90 that did not sell until the next year would likely to be dated a year later that one that sold right away. I would say that is likely a 1966. But it would be hard to argue with 1967.
Have you checked ODOT's web site? I believe that is is ODOT that has a place to check if there is a current Ohio Title for that serial number. I have not done this recently so I do not remember exact details.

MY error. I still have the DID box from that chain, and it has 525 in big red letters. Don't know why. Part # is 40530-028-003. Got it from Ohio Cycle. Has them listed for $22. Ohio did title in the 60s from year sold, not manufactured. It is titled as a 66.

Sorry Tom - gotta disagree -

Mine is original and has never been apart. It still has the original frame paint. I believe you'l agree the silver cylinder started in 1966 as mine shows and it definitely has the offset carb.

Here is a link to another model just like it.

Gordon

Hi Gordon
I am not saying that anyone has messed with your Super90. I am saying that your Super90 and my Super90 were both sold in 1966.
My Super90 has a black cylinder and an inline carburetor.

well on this bike there are no signs the cylinder was ever painted and it is an inline carburator.

Who do you see in the mirror each morning?

It's not hard to gather the allen screws together to make a kit.
