Sportbike Caliper/Line/MC with stock rotor?
« on: February 12, 2010, 05:40:29 PM »
I've owned a bunch of cb's. I sold a beautiful k1 due to horrendous braking and regretted it ever since. I now picked up a sweet cb750k2, so of course the first thing i want to address is the brakes. I've read through the braking threads.

In the early days of supermoto, a common mod was to take a sportbike mc, and caliper, and make a caliper relocator bracket, and mount it up. the common problem was that the caliper would be too fat and hit the spokes. I suspect this would be a problem with the cb because when i looked at the race bike thread, any bike with decent looking calipers always had cast wheels.

so questions is:
1) is there a particular sportbike caliper that will fit with the use of a homemade caliper relocator bracket?

Take a look here for any brake posts by FishHead and TurboGuzzi. They seem to have attempted it all  ;D

socal, I posted an answer for you in the other thread

looking at this picture, sheesh! dont attempt anything like that! the loads on the fork leg lugs are all wrong like that! there'll be a stong pull force ont the tiny 6mm top bolt!

You can use the AP racing caliper and master cylinder almost out of the box. The AP caliper clear the spokes with only a small amount of filing on the back and no horrendous bracket works, although you do have to do some, you can buy brackets to do the trick from Davies Motorsport or D&M Engineering in the UK (both have websites). I did this modification on my 450 bomber and in common with the 750, both have replacement cast iron rotors to give you one finger braking with stoppies if you want. I've kept original calipers on my 750 for the time being but will switch to APs eventually. Here's a pic of the Bomber though so you can see the setup....the rotors are exchange items from CAT engineering - also in the UK. You send in your nasty shiny Honda rotor and they send back a cast iron beauty on your old carrier centre, all refurbished and new looking!

That's why I didn't pursue that set up any further than the mock up shown. The large bottom bolt would take the brunt of the braking force and the smaller bolts would be more of a locating mount, but it is still far from ideal.
The GL or later model CB forks would be better for these type of conversions as the caliper mounts to the back of the fork legs and give more space to work with.

When I make my brake kits, I never (anymore) use the stock discs with newer calipers. The old discs are heavy as hell and when you are lightening up your front, the discs are where you get rid of alot of that weight. Most newer calipers are made for the newer, thinner disc and wont always fit on the old thick, stock discs.

My CB 750 (GL 1000 front end) with 330 mm disc and 6 piston calipers.
