750F New cam, valve spring, retainers, studs... (what else?)
« on: January 29, 2010, 02:14:37 PM »
I just brought a 78 CB750F2 home. Believe it or not, there were two for sale locally.  One was minty fresh and mundo $$ the other is in better than average shape and less $$$.

The bike I picked up has 9000 miles and runs like a top, but needs a new head gasket and some cosmetic TLC.  The motor is coming out, so I might as well have some fun.... here's my build plan:

CycleX hi-performance valve spring set (designed for the F2 and includes new heavy duty retainers)
CycleX Cylinder studs
Webcams #41 .360/270 street cam
CycleX Complete Gasket Set (includes all the o-rings, tower plugs, valve cover, other misc gaskets)
Cometic Head Gasket #C-736-F2  (only if the CycleX head gasket wont fit the oval chamber)

-Still looking for F2 rings.... are they identical to K rings?
-Still looking for a jet kit.

I haven't decided on exhaust yet, but will either go Kerker or Mac.  (Possibly open baffle)

If any of you guys have suggestions before I start throwin money down, I would appreciate the insight.  Thanks!

Bob,Check valve guides for wear, install new valve guide seals.replace all plastic/rubber cam chain tensioner bits. Consider time-serting  cam tower bolt holes. It's common for these to "pull threads". (and not just due to "heavy hands") extended life time, prolonged setting/corrosion/heat cycles, all take their toll."f's" were known to wear valve guides. luck g

Nice I am doing the same on my 77f, but I am doing the cycle x valves also.  I was able to have Ed at Western Hills Honda get me my rings for 29.99 a set.

My motor is in pieces waiting for parts, cleaning and paint.  We will need to talk when it comes to jetting.

Been there, done that.   You will need to replace the valves (why not?), guides (for sure) and seals (for sure).  There is no reason, in my mind, to have the head off and do work, without replacing the guides and seals.  F2 heads are notorious for EATING valve guides.  Mine had 10,000 miles on them and I could almost fit 2 valves through there.  I'm not even kidding.  If I were you, I'd send the head out to APE (look 'em up.  they are in Rossville or Roseville or something like that, CA), along with the parts.  Let them totally strip the head down and rebuild with new valve seats cut and guides inserted.  If you want to spend more money, let them port the intakes.  As for cam choices, the F2 is fairly radical to begin with, much more so than the K.  I'm not sure how much more you'll get out of the Webcam 41.  I did the research, and couldn't determine if it's even "hotter" than the stock F2, which you never get accurate apples to apples comparison numbers on it, in terms of duration and overlap.

Rings:  rings are considered impossible to get; but, I know a guy in the UK who does sell them, and they will fit the F2 pistons. So, the K and F pistons are different.  The rings are not interchangeable.  The good news is that the rings and bores on the F2 are generally considered to be bomb proof, and will not wear until 50k or higher.  Mine were nearly new when I had them checked.

Have fun.
