Garbage picker project..
« on: January 24, 2010, 08:30:32 PM »
Say what you will but..

I just moved to Orlando from Michigan to attend school at MMI. My wife and I moved in to a one bedroom apt. close to the school were many other students live. After living here for a couple months, I noticed on my daily walks with my dog that there is always tons of interesting looking #$%* by the dumpster. I don't know anyone here and honestly I could care less what anyone thinks, so I started to check this stuff out. Two months of living here and first good find was a fender guitar amp worth about $800. Sold it on craiglist a couple weeks later and that funded my 1977 cb550f donor bike, no money out of pocket! Since that score I check the dumpster area weekly. Workbench, plastic storage bins to soak parts in, rubber mats, all kinds of #$%*. My goal is to keep my budget at $1000, and so far things have been working out pretty good! I'm doing a total rebuild on this bike and being a cheap little bastard about it!, but I'm finding out that with patience and good networking, you can find anything you need for next to nothing.
Oh, did I mention that this whole project is taking place on my 8x10 second floor balcony!... If you want something bad enough, you find a way to make it happen!
So call me a garbage picker if you want, but your garbage is funding my build!!

Chainsaw.

People do come and go a lot here, I'm quickly noticing that. And when they go, they simply leave half their stuff by the dumpster rather than moving it!

I'll try and look for that tv show. Sounds cool.

I think dave500 has me beat on the good finds!

ahh dumpster diving!!!  I live in the back of my neighboorhood so on trash day I have been known to pic up a few items, Bicycles, skateboards, weed eaters, the list goes on and on.  Most need little to no wok to get going again.  One summer my buddies and I had an informal contest to see  who could pick and sell the most $$$ worth of used yard equipment.

I have even converted my wife.  If she sees something good she will let me know so I can go get it!

  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D cool John 8)
Messing about in what you call dumpsters can also have devastating results.
Back in the late 70s early 80s I had a shop and late one afternoon, took delivery of a case of eggs (36 dozen).
I was starting to clean up towards the end of the day and kept getting a rather nasty niff of somthing. I sussed it was coming from the egg case so I opened it and took one out.
When I broke it open, it was full of putrid green slime, the stench was vile.
I phoned the egg company and they told me that they had delivered the wrong case, I had got a case being returned on account of the smell eminating from it.
They asked if I could disspose of the case as it was getting late and they would get a fresh box to me first thing in the morning.
On my way home, I called at the local dump. There were about 5 large dumpster skips about 8 foot tall with concrete stairs going up to them.
I loaded the case on my shoulder and started out up the stairs. When I was up them far enough, I launched the case over lip of the skip, not knowing that there were three scabbers rumaging about in the skip. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D the language was unrepetable :D :D :D

old scrambler  I work at a University and pick up tons of stuff thrown away.  Big screen tv's  radios, ipods car parts off rice burners.  I even had a suzuki that a student crashed parte out.  Book bags and books are all over.  My kids 4 are in college and we scrounge books all the time.  Free education is a fringe benefit.
