Stupid me
« on: January 07, 2006, 03:36:55 PM »
My "78 550 had the light switch snapped off when I bought it. It was in high beam mode. I had an old switch assembly and removed the intact plastic switch and replaced it with the old broken one. Now my headlight is dead but all the other lights are fine (including blinkers and taillight. I obviously screwed up some kind of contact inside the switch housing. Any suggestions or schematics that show all the parts? Please help. I can't ride legally without a headlight. Also if anyone has an affordable left side switch unit, I could just replace the whole thing. This site keeps me going.

1st check fuses

2nd remove the switch housing and check the action of the switch from the inside... perhaps it is not the exact same switch or is not making the points contact as needed

3rd  check the bulb

4th start getting irate and curse a lot

5th trace the wiring to find a possible short

6th kick the tires and curse some more then walk away defeated

Egar, there is nothing stupid in asking a question! The stupid man is the one who goes on with something he doesn't understand and does further damage. Keep riding and best wishes, John.

Thanks, guys. I went ahead and bid on the switch. It's not like $20 will kill me. I would eventually like to get a replacement kill switch, but they'e either junk or NOS and $100. My kill switch broke so I fused the wires for now. I won't let my wife learn to ride until there's a kill switch there. I'm sure that my error on the headlight switch was with the contacts in the switch. I don't believe there is any contact now.

Somebody wanted that switch badly. I kept bidding up to $21 and gave up. I'm not made of money and my wife was looking over my shoulder as I continued to bid. Oh well, keep looking.
