new reg./rec.
« on: January 27, 2010, 01:53:41 PM »
I read the post thoroughly on installing the diy reg./rec. for cheap.  not sure of how smoothly it would go on my bike, not good with electric related things, so i was debating just buying a new replacement reg./rec.   found this site, supposedly it just plugs right in?  again new to bikes in general, let alone the specific electrical system on my 74 550. what r your guys' opinions?

i am almost positive mine is fried. had the fried ground wires going to the coils, havent test the actual reg. or rec. yet, just got my bike home into my new garage  ;)  so now i can toy with it and get it ready for spring. would be nice to have a battery that charges though this season

cycle-x and lowriders by summers both have a "new and improved" regulator/rectifier for about the same price. I wouldn't feel too comfy with throwing a grand to who knows who. At least Cycle-x and Summers build and ride the bikes. Also, who cares if it plugs right in? Go to radio shack, buy a cheap soldering iron, some rosin-core solder (thin-ish) and some heatshrink tubing. Then practice on some scrap wires. Soldering is easy, just remember that the hot wires need to melt the solder, not the iron.
