Tighten rotor and clutch bolts on the bench?
« on: January 30, 2010, 09:30:00 AM »
More questions. On my last build I had the wheels on the bike and used the back brake to stop the motor turning when tightening these two bolts - they need a lot of torque. Anyway to do this on the bench or just the motor in the frame? Impact driver, holding the rotor with a belt type wrench? Or am I getting impatient and should just wait a bit until the brake can be used again?
Thanks in advance.
Cliff.

for the rotor bolt i wouldn't use the back brake method ever as you are in effect twisting half the crank , get a good strap wrench [ they are pretty cheap ] and use a torque wrench . as for the clutch it would probably be ok if you couldn't make some sort of locking tool

Thanks1 I've got a larger strap wrench. I guess I could then do the same with the clutch. Put the bike in gear and hold the rotor with the wrench and tighten the clutch. Fortunately the clutch bolt has a locker washer on it.
Cheers,
Cliff.

cliff, dont hold the rotor when you do the clutch nut  either try and lock the clutch centre or go back to your original method of waiting till the engine is in and use the back brake . good luck  simon
