Antares Red (K6 color) in Duplicolor(?!) A Qualified Yes!
« on: January 30, 2010, 09:38:44 AM »
A friend of mine painted a Pinewood Derby car with Duplicolor.  When I saw the car, I had to get my K6 sidecover to see if it matched.  It sure looks close to me.

You see, HondaMan recommended I ventilate my rectifier and fuse box  :P, but I'm so done with that look now  ;) ;) and have LPMs I need to paint.

My friend is trying to find the original can but even if he can't, there's hope that I can get some rattlecan at my local auto parts store that will make my bike stop looking like a 750F (black/unpainted sidecovers).  ;)  I've got a new saddle, new HM341s, nice tank... yippeee.

This guy says he bought the 11 oz. Truck/Van/SUV version (offered in less colors I think).  He says he wet sanded and buffed.  There's no clear on the car.  Using clear (Duplicolor offers a clear) would make it look even better.

I was convinced I was going to end up buying the DonDirtbiker kit which I hear is really nice but this is a cheaper alternative for me.  Anyone know what Duplicolor code/part number this is?

I have matched paint pretty closely on several cars simply just by cruising the spray paint isles of auto parts stores (Pep Boys always has a good selection) and Lowes and Home Depot would be a good place to try as well.

I work at a Dodge dealership and I also have a 76 antares red 750. The Dodge Blaze Red  or Inferno Red is a pretty close match. I've had to touch up a few nicks on mine and like I said its fairly close not perfect but close. The paint code is PRH.

Is that the same color that's on the new body style Dodge RAM?  I just saw one about an hour ago that looked like it might be the same..

Maybe we ought to try to build a table of SOHC4 colors and good matches with currently available automotive colors and put it in the FAQ's.  (Someone here recently mentioned the Pontiac Vibe Gold being a nice match.)

I love that Planet Blue and we're planning on doing my brother's K4 with that color... so, yes if anyone has a good recent auto color match on Planet Blue :)

The color on the Pinewood Derby car (similar to Antares Red) is:

Duplicolor P199.  It is called Dark Cherry or Cherry Red Metallic.

I'll be hunting it down and trying it on my LPM sidecovers.  It seems they recommend adhesion promoter on their web site.  From their site:

Quote
Q. How do I get paint to stick to plastics?

A. Clean plastic with a water and ammonia based detergent solution, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Next use Dupli-Color® Wax and Grease Remover (CM541) to remove any silicone. Dupli-Color® offers paints intended for plastic application such as our Bumper Coatings, Vinyl and Fabric Colors and Trim Paint. For maximum adhesion, some plastics may require Dupli-Color® Adhesion Promoter (CP199).

Now we have to figure out if there's a Planet Blue.  :)
