I'm in the same boat as you, haven't had to buy any turntable parts for a long time...mostly because I stockpile things like needles and cartridges. I had this site bookmarked, probably because an audiophile friend sent it to me.

http://www.needledoctor.com/

Haven't dealt with them so I can't really vouch for them but there you go. If I can find the time I'll sift through my audio bookmarks to see if there's anything else there. Of course there's always feebay if you know what you want. Often cheaper than buying retail for this type of stuff.

I deal with Needle Doctor almost weekly.
Recommend them very highly.

Finding parts for a turntable is like trying to find a belt for a tape deck! Obviously online might be best but I have had luck with small hole in the wall electronics repair shops. You know, the ones that seem to have been in the same run down location forever. A lot of those guys are "lifers" and seem to be able to dig that stuff up.
I would love to build a nice component system but so many receivers are meant for home theater and just dont have the punch they used to. Good receiver, turntable, AND reel to reel would be awesome! Oh and some nice old Altec-Lancing cabinets. My step father had a pair of those and they sounded excellent and did they put out the sound.

I would buy it from the needle doctor, anything they have at Radio Shack will be guaranteed #$%* for the most part.

looke like needle doctor is the one for me. i can get a new "budget cartridge" for about 25 dollars. the last one i bought, in 1988 or 1989 i got a really nice, high end cartridge for 35 and that was considered pretty high priced for then. they have some cartridges selling for 5 figures! 16,000 dollars for a freakin cartridge?!?!? who the hell is going to spend 16,000 for just the cartridge? i have 1/50th of that into my entire stereo (not including speakers) i'm having trouble wrapping my brain around that one.

in fact i dont think all the stuff i own is worth 16,000 dollars! (the house is in the wifes name only, belonged to her before we met)

I love the idea that somebody can make a living off of producing something the best that they can, and be supported by patrons who's funds appear limitless. Some of those turntables are magnificent looking. However, there's no way I am going to hear sympathetic vibrations of the wires that supply the cartridge, or distortion of bass frequencies due to incomplete isolation of the turntable from it's surroundings, so my Panasonic is fine for me, thank goodness!

wife picked me up an audio technica moving magnet cartridge with a spae stylus at a local audiophile store for 24.95. with my 20 year old reciever/amplifier, it's all i need. especially since about 50% of my vinyl is pre-1960 blues, jazz and be-bop

You would poop your pants if you listened to the higher end mc cartridges hooked up to high-end equipment. Most people have never had the chance to listen to seriously good equipment, only problem is the $$$$$.  :P

Don't look down on your 20 yr. old equipment bucky. Chances are it's better than a lot of the stuff that passes for current high end. It was around 20 years ago that manufacturers realized that they could eliminate their upper end consumer products and sell just audiophile quality or crap and most of the general public wouldn't care/notice. The market for the upper end consumer market was small. People either had the money, along with the ear and bought audiophile quality, or they listened to whatever was priced/marketed the best. They decided that the small market of people that had the ear but not the money to buy audiophile was not worth building for. There's some great 15-25 even 35 yr. old equipment floating around out there, and some of it can be had pretty cheap too.

I would love to see whether I can tell how good good is, but I'm content to listen on whatever equipment is convenient. I actually pay for a service called Rhapsody which streams compressed audio which I listen to it through some moderately good to very good equipment. I can hear more detail and depth when I listen to vinyl, but I don't usually miss the difference much. Please note that in order to hear above 12k hz I have to boost 6db or so. I'm not sure I can hear anything over 15k.
Too many live music venues I think. :o

i actually prefer older solid state equipment. you seem to get a much warmer sound from it.

Later seventies equipment would probably be better for mass production solid state stereo equipment.
Just make sure your power caps and transformers are OK.

Speaking of high end equipment, I listened to a McIntosh stereo a few years ago. It was nice, really nice but it did not have the raw power. Great for audiophile listening but not jamming out and loud parties. But that was the system I listened too. It was also about 50,000 at the time.

Hey Bucky Katt -
You may be able to find cartridges at a local
guitar / music equipment store.
If they sell DJ equipment, then
they probably also sell cartridges though
the selection may be limited.
