questions about fork cartridge inserts.....
« on: January 25, 2010, 03:20:14 PM »
i have a set of cartridge inserts that im installing in my 78F front end
what im tring to understand is if its ok that the cartridge is a different diameter then the tube.(see pics)
anyone have better pics of how the install works?
these are not goldsomethings.  they are mikes xs650.  i know that we have talked about them before but i have not seen any install pics.  i thought that someone was talking about making an adaptor or something.

any help would be great

Diameter of cartridge and fork might help.

hey jaguar-

i was waiting to answer, because i'm not an expert on this subject, but i have installed a few of those. you don't want the side of the emulator to contact, only the surface between it and the stock damper rod. the little nylon washer around the damper rod is what seals fluid between the lower and upper cavities. all you need is to ensure that when fluid travels up the damper rod and through the cartridge, it doesn't leak past the valve. i've used an o-ring around the lip at the bottom of the emulator before, but i don't know if that is necessary, as the fork spring provides a lot of pressure.

actually, you want the O.D. of the emulator to be small enough to allow the fluid to travel past it and back down to the rebound holes, which remain stock.

one of my shopmates took race tech's certification course. i'll talk to him about it next time i see him.

so it doesnt matter?  thats what i kind of figured given the fact that the forks worked before the cartridge so they done really add any sealing.
thanks now if i can just figure out what parts from my bin go with the 78F front end(see other thread) i can build the forks

Here's what Racetech has to say about emulator fitment.  Should be applicable to your "knock offs" . . . .
