Rear harley rim on honda hub
« on: January 31, 2010, 11:25:15 AM »
76 CB750F with 78 K motor.

Been doing a mild chop with my bike being it was completely messed up by the PO. Everything is coming along nicely thanks to all of you on here. Riding around it seems that everyone I ran into has had a old CB at one point in there lives and im always hearing about there own bike. Personally I love it. I do recall a gentleman at one point told me that they use to take harley rims and lace it to the rear hub. Im guessing this was something that was done to put a little more rubber in the back of the bike. Never really thought to much about this until I found a guy in the area that due to the slow economic times is laceing wheels fairly cheep. (well what I would like to think as fairly cheep) I guess I have some questions for this.

1. What does this look like?

2. Is there a certain rim size I should look for?

3. What size tire would fit on this properly?

4. What issues am i going to have with chain/ sprocket clearance?

5. Is there going to be any swing arm clearance issues?

6. If to be period correct i have to go down in rim size how much with it effect my gearing? What gears should I run to return back to "stock" drive ratios?

This is all I can think of at the time now. I cant seem to find alot of info on how people have done this. If theres a thread I missed that answers alot of this please post it for me. I have yet to talk to the guy yet, I just want to be more informed before i walk into his shop.

just as a heads up I work nights and am off to bed. If the members here post questions for me here please be patient as ill will get back to them once i wake up this evening.

Thank you for all your help

16  x 3.0 in 40 hole, is what you need.

It will look like what 80 % of the 750 choppers run.

No big dia change as tire is higher in section.

Up to 130 should be fine, 140 may fit on 750 up to 76..77/78 have more clearance.

If you have 78 motor you front sprocket is further out than the 76 rear, cange the carrier, or shim out sprocket.

friedfish80, This is a pic of a 16" 130 tire the PO put on my 76 750. Doesn't look to bad does it!! It adds a little beefer look to the rear. My goal is to put this girl back to the stock setup of seat and pipes. so eventally I'll go back with stock 18" on the rear also.

Since this setup was on the bike when I purchased it I can't give much info on what is involved in doing this. But the best I can tell swingarm, sprockets, and chain seems to still be factory. Im not sure about front, but rear sprocket is 48 teeth and at 60 mph if Im not mistaken it tachs out at about 4000 to 4500 rpms. It looks like The PO swapped out different wheel and tire and didn't have change anything else, but I could be wrong.

Very common in the day, Every thing works fine stock just change the tire, rim and spokes. I had one that I rode a lot it handled fine. Some of the the resto-purist types don't like them on a stock bike but most would agree it's OK on a chopper.
The only handling problem I had was with mixed tires, I think a goodyear and a continental, they didn't get along well.

FF,

Check out hondachopper.com.  It's rare for a bike over there to NOT have a harley rim laced to a honda hub  ;D

It will look fine, especially on a chop.  You can get a 16x3, 16x4 and 16x5.5's pretty easily.  Other sizes 16x3.5 etc, are out there but are harder to find.  Different tire (brands) are different widths and each manufacturer recommends a width range of rims for their tires.  Generally a 130/140 fits on a 16x3, a 160 on a 16x4 and a 180 needs a 16x5.5.  But those are just rules of thumb.

The real limiting factor will be the width of your swingarm or if you build a hardtail the width of the axle plates and the width of your rear frame rails.  Trying to stuff a wider tire in there is always a bit of trail and error, be prepared to switch sprockets, sprocket carries and/or cush drives.  The 77/78's had wider sprocket carriers, sprockets and cush drive.  Mix and match till it fits!!!

If you have a 78 motor in a 76 frame, I'd be surprised if the sprockets weren't already changed to the 76's.  I think the 78 sprockets would have caused a clearance issue.

Hey thanks for the input everyone. Looks like I got to go out and mesure my swingarm to see what I can fit. The issue I'm seeing now is that I'm running a rear disk brake. I would perfer not to rip appart my wheel I got on there now in case I want to switch back. So I would need to find another disk brake hub or convert over to a drum brake.

When I get home in the AM I'll post a pic of my bike so you can see what I'm working with here.

Also when it come to swaping out swingarms. Would a DOHC swingarm give me more width?

Heres what im working on now. Not pictured is the shorty shocks, saddle bags, and diffrent exhaust. I have a set of TC Bros forward controls and im picking up a wixom fairing from a friend of mine. (kinda going for the harley street glide look).
