Top oil tank mounts/brackets.

See this picture of alloy brackets that "hang" the top of oil tank in frame.

Thx KOS.. I made some in a C shape, and they keeps the tank in place, but I perfer thoose ones.

Jimmy........that style damper was used on earlier Honda models including the CL72 and CL77 Scramblers. (See Avitar) It is hard to find NOS units. I have supplied used ones to others on this board but the dampening is not always equal in both directions. If Mark does not have one, I have several in my parts stash. That rubber shroud is intended to slip-fit onto the fixed end of the piston to keep the sleeve clean.

I am one who has purchased one from Old scrambler, and like he says the damping is a bit off but they look cool! I do not use it, but only for static show use.

Hi, what can I say, I cannot believe the help I have been shown to me. Mark your photographs are superb, what craftsmanship. There is no doubt in my mind I am going ahead with this project - but Mark has created a problem:- do I try and build a CR750 replica, or do I shoot for the moon and go for a RC 750 replica. If you all would be kind enough to keeping on with your postings, it will keep the desire burning. I am really tempted to go with the RC, but I do not want to stand on anybody.s toes in respect to them earning their living, it is after all just a dream. Time is not a factor to me, information encouragement and of course money creeps into it, oh dear I can feel a plan coming on, many thanks again, Andy

so based on all around performance and streetability, what is the best steering damper out there? i was looking at one from mikes XS, and welding a tab to the frame in the proper area and then using a clamp on my GL forks. thoughts?

@wannabridin: I think their discussion is centered around 40 year old steering dampers and mounting methods that go with reproducing a CR750. If you have a modern unit and it is securely mounted, for example not like the original CR750 frame clamp that KOS's earlier pic shows, you should be fine.

Like Rob I had a damper off Dennis as well and it's great for me as it's a "period piece" if you like. I can supply a German made modern version of this too at £59.95 for the UK, little more for postage outside the UK - PM me if you want one. They are all black integral dampers like the CL72/77 ones not through rod and fit just perfectly on a CR type setup.

I ended up creating a welded mount on the frame for my damper - those bolt on ones are one area of authenticity that you can keep. If I'm going to be getting a tank slapper on when racing I want to know the bracket is not going to slide around and given I've had a slapper befoer on my 350 K4 that snapped the damper in two, the forces shouldn't be underestimated!

Mark - what's the sum total of RC/CR differences then, it seems to be limited to seat style and oil breather positioning?

Lordmoonpie.. I will PM you when I get a bit cash again... just ordered exhaust and cooler with lines and bought a AC/DC Tig welder... so I better slow a bit down for the rest of the month before the gf kills me

Btw, can enyone explain to me about the oil breather? I have no clue what , where and why, except that it must be some kind of "valve" that prevents vacuum in the oil tank!?!?!

Jimmy, I think it is just a catch tank to prevent spillage.
You can see a factory tank about 3/4 the way down this page.

Thx guys... I will take some photos this weekend with tons of other questions i bet.... I actually started out wanted to build a cafe racer but as i got a hold on a CR tank, seat and oil tank I got way more into the CR look... and now Im just into the intire CR

Here is a photo of the Kit CR750 breather. As you can see it mounts under kit seat and has hose that runs from top of oil tank to breather and if any oil accumulates in breather, it can then flow back to oil tank in the other hose. Then there is an air only, outlet hose that exits from the rear. There is a baffle arrangement inside this tank to aid in oil/air separation and this system is used on all Honda GP bikes if this period. 1959-1973

Note: the Kit seat/fuel tank mount that bolts to frame. You can see the oil tank opening, that is not accessible when this kit mounting strap is used. In the original kits, standard CB750 oil tanks were to be used.

Found another photo for those needing accurate period correct information on Honda Kit CR750's

This one shows the kit tach by Nepon Denso, Smiths Oil gauge with chrome ring, Proper stamped steel mount with rubber gauge mounts behind to insulate gauges from vibrations. Also shown is top kit fork triple tree crown.

but again, this means more things to redo- well I might stick with my own solution, lighter weight, and easier to attach.

Interesting read...
My thoughts on this, is the stubby steering damper should be bolted on and checked for travel, till it works properly..then Welded on..

could be wrong, but it would eliminate some problems..

these ones came with loose brackets and I can't really find any pictures to where on the frame they should get mounted.
is there anyone who can provide this

If you have the correct foot rest mounts, the exhaust fasten just at the rear of the mount.

Gents.

I was just fabricating new oil tank brackets after alle the great input I got through you, but discovered that I dont actual have any brackets bottom left.. I cant recall if I removed them around 5 years ago, or they where just missing.. I think I acually removed them to be able to get the oil tank into the frame with the rearwheel and motor mounted.. dont ask why i thought this was a good idea at the time

but again, its not reallly a big thing as it can be rewelded.

does any of you guys have a oil tank picture with this bracket welded on the tank??

Jimmy, you can see my left mount here - it consists of right angled bracket bolted to two small brackets welded to the frame. The tank then just rests on the right angled bracket...
