Thinking About This For My CBX?
« on: February 03, 2010, 08:07:34 AM »

I'm not sure about this item. What I am talking about is an "engine protector" for the CBX. I'm not sure I want to do this, because of the look. But, I don't want to thik about what my engine could look like, if the bike went down or whatever either. Need to make a decision on this. They are temporarily out of stock for now, so I've got some time to decide. They are $295 for the set and they are new! I saw a set on ebak that was used AND had some slight rash on one place and they were $200! Comments? ???

Hi Bill, i like what the engine guards do but have never liked the extra bulk they add to the look of a beautiful engine. Just my opinion mate..

those are some pricey crash bars, they look ok but seem to kinda stickout. with a heavy bike like that it would be a real bummer if you laid it. if it was me i'd go for the protection over the look.

I know Mick, but I sometimes get nervous with this one (being as replacement parts are so costly. Not really a fan of the bars, like you, but I ALSO like what they do! Now, I have NO intention of letting anything hapen to it, but you just never know. I appreciate your input on this. ;)

Yeah, they ARE kinda pricey, but used ones aren't that much cheaper either. ::) I would be SICK, if I laid this one down and the engine got "Road Rash", you know? :( Wonder if they would not be so onbvious if they were powder coated the same color as the engine? Of course THAT would add to the cost. The powder coat would get messed up if it was dropped, but so would the chrome. ::)

I think with the chrome finish, they seem to blend better and simply look like part of the exhaust.  I think the insurance they provide is probably worth the small cosmetic penalty.

Yeah, you're right about that. I'm thinking more and more along that line. IF I DID drop the bike, or whatever, there would be the ill feelings that I didn't take the precaution, then there would be the efforts to find the necessary replacement parts, then there would be the COST of those parts and finally taking care of the situation. All this and wishing that I'd just have put the engine protector on there in the first place. ::)

Now, I have to wait til they get some more in stock. Think I'll email them to see if they have ANY idea when they WILL get some more in! :)

Thanks Bill AND the others who have provided input on this, Bill ;)

Yes, looks not so bad. Does every bike tip over sooner or later? Mine seem to. Usually someone else's fault.

Was never a fan of that type on CBX.
Although I have no personal experience of it, I heard they cause frame to bend instead of damaging cases.
The tight 'V' with buffers were better from all accounts, (came down between cam end caps, circled around crank end ) They 'gave' a bit on a fall over and prevented case damage (although I guess they 'folded up' if you were moving at any speed?)

Those were the only type I'd seen for them, myself. Maybe I need to go over to CBX World and see what their concensous is on the subject. I figure that a number of them are against putting them on at all. But, The question to them, will be about the different kinds. ;)

Found this engine protector on ebay $42, a close look at the 2nd photo will show why the price is low!  NO THANK YOU! :P

i'll echo what's been said before about messing with the otherwise unbridled glory of that sweet sweet sex six.

but reality sets in and those bars are a wise move. i do wonder if black will blend better or worse than chrome. this is where interweb research pays off.

Thanks Bill, I am beginning to think that the chrome set would be the way to go. Thing is, they want $49.90 to SHIP that set I posted here! That's more than they want for the SET! IF the shipping wasn't so high, I'd be tempted to buy that set, fix them up, paint them and see what a black set would look like on there. The THOUGHT of THAT bike going DOWN, is Frightening!

I'd get it.  It would be hard to get that engine looking right after a road rash.

Hi Bill,
lot of sellers are putting up low prices and high shipping to avoid paying excessive eBay/paypal fees.
If you thing under $90.00 is reasonable, go for it.

Considering.... you could always take them off once you get to a show or meet. Then put them back on for daily riding. Maybe? :D

Yea seems to me that given that parts are expensive and given that the bike will be a bear to break down to replace motor parts I would put them on personally.

I'm convinced, I just have to wait til they are back in stock. So far, Tim's CBX is where I've seen them and the are out of stock presently. Of course, I won't be doing too much riding for a bit, til the weather clears up AND we are scheduled for some more Winter Mix, the first part of this week. ::) But, who knows? Around here, we listen to the weather report and see what actually happens. :D
