Minimum completion to start?
« on: February 03, 2010, 10:21:09 AM »
Hello all,

I am attempting to accomplish some things on my bike while it is in my basement for the winter. Problem is, I can't put it all together, or I won't be able to get it out. So my question is this. Can I somehow start the engine without assembling the front end and controls, and without the exhaust? I really want to make sure this thing will fire up before I go any further. Thanks

Does it have new rings? Please read the link and it explains that the desire to do the quick start is bad for breaking in new rings. Dan

I did not take the engine apart when I started the build, it ran when I got it with no visible leaks. Probably has all original everything in the case.

Running the motor in the basement may not be the wisest thing to do.

You can run the motor completely out of the bike if you need to, look around on www.cyclexchange.net, they have pics somewhere of the stand they use for engine testing.  All you need is power, coils, oil tank, and fuel input.  Personally I wouldn't run the motor without exhaust pipes but opinions seem to vary on that point.

If it ran when you got it, then don't you already know it will run?

Well, I did wash, clean, and paint. I also replaced the plug wires and some other parts. I would just rather make sure it runs fine before reassembling.

This is a 550, right?  If so, then there's nothing that can't be done on the top end of the engine while it's in the frame versus out of the frame.

I guess you are right. I think I may just be over anxious during this long, Syracuse winter.

It won't hurt anything to start it and run for a few minutes, unless you forget the oil. It will sound extremely weird, like several ducks farting loudly. You can blip the throttle by hand turning the carb rack throttle wheel. You should have some kind of kill switch in case something goes awry and the engine tries to redline. Obviously open some windows to get the fumes out but your house will still smell for a few days.

And this is exactly why I said that running the motor in the basement might be unwise.

Beyond the smell would be the lethal fumes.

I guess I will just sit in a chair, stare, and wait for spring. :-\
