Why do 90% of the houses in NZ have only one bathroom?

Is it because of the age of the houses? Just looking at real estate and seems to be a common occurance.

Well...How many baths do you need to take care of your bizness?

Never had more than one in my lifetime in what is often considered to be the showcase of bathroom neediness...the good ol' US of A.

Take a crap, get over it, enjoy life.

most of the older housing has one bathroom, most of the newer ones have an "ensuite" as well. I've gone upmarket and have a hand basin in the laundry, good for washing the hands after being in the garage, it also doubles as a urinal when the bathroom is occupied

Is this worshiping huge and multiple bathrooms a U.S. thing or is it more widespread? Maybe we need a "what's your toilet bowl index" thread like the cylinder index thread

. My old 1923 house had one but I added one on the second floor when I tore out three bedrooms to make a master bedroom but they are still small typical of this vintage house. Maybe when you are young like Dukiedook you don't mind running downstairs in the middle of the night

I got but then I live with 3 females and if you have to travel and get home and have to pee, you realize the value of a second toilet!

Actually I have 2 full baths and one 1/2 bath(basin and bowl). It is unusual to find a home in thias area that has one bathroom. May be just a local custom.

I'm in the same boat as Bobby....2 full and 1 half bath. Oh and I have a slop sink in the garage which may or may not have been used as a temporary urinal.

My toilet bowl index must be up there pretty high... 3 bathrooms for the 5 of us, including a utility sink in the laundry room off the garage, although none of them are particularly large.

On the other hand, 3 of my 'users' are teenagers in high school, so the one for the boys is usually only 1 step cleaner than a Texaco station, and the one for the girl is usually occupied...

I think it's turned into more of a status thing here, people seem to think your wealth is proportionally related to the number of toilets you've got and that influences choice rather than obsessing about whether or not two people in the same household might need a crap at the same time. Us, well there was one when we moved in but with three kids 11, 13 and 14 we added another. And no I ain't loaded, just approaching fifty and needing to go that little bit more often!

Scunny - excellent tip on the basin, have used the parts washer myself, on the odd occasion I didn't think I'd make it into the house - careful though, your ally cases will be tarnished if you forget to change the fluid!

3 full and 1 1/2 bath here. One of the full's is a Jack and Jill shared by two bedrooms.

When I added onto my house, I was considering making the downstais a full bath. Found out that the county wouldn't allow that since I'm on a septic system and already had a full bath upstairs in my 3 bedroom house. My question to him was "do you mean that adding another bath would mean we're going to be taking more baths or something?" He didn't have an answer to that one. They allowed only a half-bath downstairs.

Also, probably when home size hit 3,000+ SF. You have to do something with that extra square footage.

In Israel fairly small apartments or houses were common. One full bath was common, with maybe a closet with just a toilet as an extra. Many of the floors were poured concrete, so laying in the plumbing was a pain; and adding more an even bigger chore.

You guys don't know you're born. When I was a child, we didn't have a bathroom.
The none water toilet was down the yard with no lighting.
The bath was a tin tub in front of the fire for the children and we all had to go out while the adults had a bath.

Well, I have 5 bedrooms, no bathtub, 1 shower 1 wc, and the 3 teenagers,
and oftimes their friends, sometimes had to fight for time.
Know what? I Feel it made them better people beacuse they had to schedule shower times etc etc.
Just my 2 cents.

PS. If I ever get a job and save some money the wife wants a TUB and a 2nd bathroom.

Go figure.
