Valve Questions

I'm putting in new rings and I have the head off. I was wondering how can I test to see if my valves need to be redone? Is there a way I can test this without taking it all apart?

When I got the bike it would smoke on and off and it ran horribly. The carbs were completely gunked up and I rebuilt them but I don't think I was ever able to synch them correctly. I tore into the engine to put in new rings in hopes of solving the smoking issue but the pistons don't seem to have any blow by browning.

Also, on a different not, what is the springy rubber/plastic that keeps dust off of your forks called?

Thanks for any help!

fork gaitors!!if the heads off,you should go the extra and disemble ,wire wheel and re seat them if theyre in good shape, new seals, its only half a job otherwise,do it once /do it well.

And while it's off look at valve margins to see if there is recession? If so, order some up and replace, as there is no repair (ie: refacing) of worn Honda Valves due to hardness coating on valve sealing surface. In any case...what's the point of taking off head if you are not going to fix the problem?

You have to take off the head to replace a piston ring

Also do these look like the correct fork boots?

Is there anything else I need to order to do a fork job? I've never worked on forks before but my gaitors were completely destroyed.
