Hondaman - Any idea of when book #2 will be coming out?  The one about the F's/ later K's & performance stuff?

It will still be a while: I have been knee-deep in 750 engines for about 6 months, mostly because of the first one! It was supposed to help folks build theirs themselves, but some decided to send me their engines instead (an unintended side effect!).

I was wondering about this.  I bought the book... which convinced me to order an ignition unit and a swing-arm rebuild (both of which I'm very impressed with BTW)...  I also lost track of how many questions I've asked you.  I assume I'm not the only one.  I'm not sure how you have the time to do all this.... I'm just happy you're doing it.  Such an incredible contribution towards helping others keep these bikes running.

Oh... and here's one more question:

In your book you mention some of the early bikes are missing drain holes in the frame.  Mine is an older (1975 F) one, and I can't find the drain holes as you described.  I'm going to send the frame out to be powder coated, and I figure I should drill these before I do.

I attached a picture on the bottom front part of my frame - this is where I should see the holes... correct?
I do see whole in the middle center brace (picture also attached), but that's the only one I could find.

Should I drill the holes as you describe in your book?... or am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks!

You're looking in the right place, all right! They didn't drill ANY holes after the K4, and many frames have rusted from it. You'll have to add one on each side.

I think that the pressures of costs on the later 750 sales efforts just made them start cutting out some steps. By the time of the first 750F bikes (1975-ish), there were many competing bikes for the touring market, which caused sales to slow and price pressures to rise. That's one of the reasons the later bikes wear out so much faster than the earlier ones, but this can all be 'fixed', as noted through the book.

Thanks for getting one!

Either way is fine, "Z", but I think you'll save some postage (to Canada) if you get it from Lulu directly. By the 1st class I must use, the Canada postage is something like $10, while Lulu gets Publisher's Rate, like $5 or so.

This might sound odd, but if you wait maybe a week or so, they may have another special soon. They have been popping these 10% to 20% specials up all summer this year. They only last a few days, but I usually come and edit this post so it pops up as 'new' on the forums for everyone to nab them. ;)

I'm also interested next time it goes on sale. I missed it by one day last time. Shipping to Oz is probably steep too.

Hi Mark,

Working through my rebuild with your book.  I have the cases split and I said to myself, why not do the gear polishing performance improvement.

I've attached a pic... is this pretty much what you were talking about? (I removed the top half of the case so you could see the gears.  That will obviously be going back on before I start).

I assume I should use the fine lapping compound... or should I start with the coarse and then finish with the fine?
Do I also put the polishing compound on the primary gear?

Also, how long is a long while?  :)    Is that about 1-2 hours total turning time on each gear - so about 5-10 hours turning time altogether.  Or, put another way, how do I know when I'm done?

Thanks!
Chris

Ah, that brings back memories of keeping warm on cold Illinois winter nights...sweating, actually. I can still feel the ache in my right shoulder from the turning... But, what else can you do with your bike in Illinois in January and February?

Your setup looks good, if you bolt on the other case so all the gears get involved. I used fine compound on the ones I did, because in those days I wasn't sure of what I was doing, yet. If you look closely at the teeth on the gears, you will see the tiny hog-cut steps: you want to knock the edges off, at least. On the road, this takes about 20k miles of touring riding.

I would turn a while, then separate the cases to make sure the compound doesn't work its way into the bronze bushings, repeat until bored. It only takes a couple of the 8mm bolts to hold the case together well enough for this process.

Some time ago, someone on this forum found a way to make an electric motor setup for this process. I think it only took minutes to accomplish, and I also think he said it took many hours to clean the fast-moving compound out of everywhere it went! Keep an eye on that stuff: it doesn't take much of it in a bronze bushing to tear things up.

I just looked at www.lulu.com, and they still show the code on their main page, good until September 7. It should work OK. When you go to check out, at the bottom of the screen(s) you will see a place where they ask for a "promo code" or "discount code", just type it in right there. When you go to the next page, it shows up the discount.

Sometimes their website acts strangely, slowly, and other times it moves right along. I think they get a LOT of traffic during these specials.

Try these steps, Zoran - before Friday 9/7 at 11:59 PM, though (that's when the sale ends):

1. Go to www.lulu.com
2. At the top of the page, use SEARCH to find: My CB750 Book . (I recommend the long-lasting hardcover version).
3. When the book appears, click "Add To Cart".
4. When the next page appears, there is a little window that says "COUPON", type in the code there. The code is:  CITHARA20
5. The page will change to show the discounted price then.

I just tried this, and it worked OK. If your computer can't ''see' some of the items, maybe try a different browser (like Firefox or Mozilla?). Sometimes Microsoft's Internet Explorer does strange things...

Hang in there: they seem to put on sales every 4 weeks or so, for about 3-5 days at a time. They e-mail me, so I jump right over here and post it when they do. Sometimes they sell them for less than I can buy them: that's when I buy my copies. :)
