The Who...halftime
« on: February 07, 2010, 05:36:28 PM »

That was just pitiful. If I was Pete Townshend or Roger Daltrey and watched what I had just done I'd go dig a hole, crawl in it and die. No spark at all...no nuthin'.

Yep.  A friend's mother-in-law had the quote of the night.

Meh.
It was dull, and strained.
Back in the day they really rocked, now it just kinda stumbled along.

Bloody shame. Sometimes going out on top is better. The Who's first farewell concert was what - 1982 - hopefully this is the last.

MacArthur said," Old soldiers never die they just fade away." I think the Who is trying to fade out over decades.

I dont know. I thought they sounded good for as long as they have been around. The guys I watched the game with I had the same thoughts as you 4 did. I saw the Who in 1986. Great show. Always liked them.

pete townsend is mostly deaf i understand. an article i read on msnbc.com said it almost looked as if the "performance" was pre-recorded. too bad, Zak Starkey looked like he was really right on tonight. he learned from the best though, his next door neighbor when he was a kid, his "uncle" keith moon.

I also felt that was a poor performance, but wonder if poor monitor mixes contributed to the poor performance, as it seemed like not only were there grave intonation problems, but also there were general problems with time during vocal harmonies. I saw the Who 5 years ago and they were much better than this eve.

I felt the performance was substandard.  I am still willing to tip my hat to the Who.  I really appreciate their music... felt a bit let down, but heck, these guys are old doggies.  Hmmm, I guess a lot of us here are too.  And dang, our bikes are at least 32 years old.  Suddenly I feel old.

Having said all that, the Who did some incredible ground-breaking stuff in the day and I appreciate it still (as many of us do).

Yup, back in the day they were FANTASTIC!!! Tonight though they either didn't have it together OR they just don't have it together anymore. I'm not a big fan of the Stones but they can still run it out there like nobody's business. Yeah. that's right, I just put the Stones over The Who which doesn't make me feel all that great but WTF....good music is good music.

i love both the stones and the who. only thing about the stones is, they havent released anything decent in almost 30 years, probably not since tattoo you, in my opinion anywaysj. getting Zak Starkey was the best thing that the remaining members of the who could have done when they did it but i dont think they'll ever sound right again without John Entwistle. ol "thunderfingers" really made the who's sound. i dont think the loss of keith moon hurt the who like losing entwistle did.

It was sad, and it was prerecorded to boot. I saw Daltry's lips move out of synch. People forget how much John Entwhistle added to the band. I was very sad watching that.

The Who got shortchanged.  They were rushed, the stage sucked, etc.  They only got to play a medley of bits of their songs, not even one complete song.  The whole half-time-show concept for The Who was a bad idea.  They need a real venue, with a real playlist, etc., so they can really perform.

Hell, Townshend didn't even smash a guitar!

I watched it with my parents.  They said they just couldn't get into this modern music.  Then my sister and I pointed out that this group has been around for about 40 years.   :D

I love the WHO, I have the techs play them when I am havung my radiation but they have been having farewell tours for 10 years. They were on some show just a few years ago and they blew the rest of the acts away. There comes a time you need to go out when you are at your peak.

I knew there was a reason I was supposed to watch the game. ???  And then I forgot and finally turned it on in the late third quarter.  Doesn't sound like I missed much but then again when has the halftime show been anything but lame, poorly executed entertainment?  The venue itself just lends itself to mediocrity.  Anyways congratulations to the Saints, a well deserved win.

There was just zero energy from the Who. For me, it was painful to watch and hear. I know they are old, but comon, it's knowing when to tip the stage to someone else.

It could only get worse next year if they decide to have Grateful Dead play....  ;)

ihave everything ever released under the rolling stones name, thats why i say that. i have to say, i think they peaked at some girls, but thats just this Deadheads opinion  :D they're one of the bands that just need to quit it and go enjoy their billions. areosmith is about the only good band from way back when that are still doing it. once jerry died the former members of the dead have tried in different lineups but to me, the magic is gone there too.

I think we have Janet's wardrobe malfunction to blame for the Who's showing in some way. The organisers just went low risk, low controversy and it sadly also meant low entertainment!

As for long time bands who still cut it, Alice Cooper and Lynyrd Skynyrd still work for me, especially now Rattlesnake Ricky Medlocke is in the Skynyrd lineup, they absoutely ROCK live!  ;D

My sentiments have always been, "I'll be grateful when they're dead".  :-* :-*

As for the 'Who', they've been around as a band one year longer than I've been on this earth, I wish I had half their energy. And Roger Daltrey is in great shape for his age.

seems like you either love or hate the dead, not a whole lot of in between. i saw 178 shows between 1981 and 1995.
