Oil pump leaking, safe to crack open or replace it
« on: February 07, 2010, 05:25:32 PM »
I got my recently dormant cb650c to run but i noticed that while its running, the oil pump leaks. I had contemplated taking the thing apart and replace a gasket, replace an o-ring or whatever to make this thing quit leaking. What I want to know is it safe to crack this thing open or am I possibly opening a can of worms that I don't want to deal with?

This thing had been sitting for about 4 years before I brought it to life again a few days ago, any suggestions that would help me get this thing back up and going without toasting it would be helpful.

My guess would be that the O-ring leaking is going to be the one that is not available from Honda. This is assuming the point of failure is the same as the 550. The pumps are the same design so I'm willing to bet... Is it the flat "cover" on the pump that is leaking? If so you might need to take it to a hydraulic shop to get the right size o-ring. If it's the same size as the 550's pump BryanJ should have some O-rings.

Yea its the flat cover with 3 Phillips head screws, thats where its leaking from. Specifically from the bottom screw, and its a steady drip.

Never had a 650 one apart so cant be certain but i still got some 500/550 sets, spend some time with on line parts list and see if the 3 between the body of pump and crankcase are the same on 650 and 550, if so chances are the top cover will be too.
