Sooo, I went and looked at this bike. It was enlightening.

First, the price exploded. No dealsy on the possible trade. I guess '71's are blowing up. We were both really surprised. I hung out with him a couple hours and he was a good dude. He by no means ripped the old timer off. He even told him he was going to sell it after he had his fun. The old man got a fair price considering he didn't have to fiddle with a computer. If you had asked me before the auction hit 5k I would have said the old timer got street price for it.

Second, and more important, I do not like 750's. I had never ridden one. Looking at them side by side the lines of the 550 are more artistic and proportionate. The riding experience wasn't very good either. The 550 is nimble and in good tune will cruise all day at 90mph. I know because I've done it and didn't destroy the bike in the process. I'll be happy to stick with the little sister  ;D

If you get a SOHC/4 off off ebay you will more then likely pay a very high inflated price. In years past it wasn't to bad, but nowdays for the most part its ridiculous. I would go through other means to try to find a  SOHC/4. I think some of these sellers on ebay are trying to make a living by doing nothing else but flipping these bikes.

Boxnife, I don't dislike any SOHC/4 but the 750 K's 69-76 are my favorite. I don't see how you can say you don't like the 750. I had a all original 1976 CB550 back in the 70's and I really liked it. Of course if I knew than what I know now I would of never sold it, but I still favor the 750 I must because I have 2 of them ;)

It's really bad that your 550 was stole. I hope you find another one. Talk to people, ask questions, let them know your looking for old Honda motorcycles. No telling what you might run across.

I shouldn't have said I didn't like it, I should have said I prefer the riding experience of the 550. Maybe when I don't weigh less than a pile of pillows the heft of the 750 will feel more natural.
