How to restore the threads in the Wheel Hubs?
« on: January 27, 2010, 02:40:30 PM »
Hi guys,

How do restore these threads?  I have already torn up one bearing retainer, I don't want to do it again!

Thanks!!!

Thread file.

Or if you can find a machine shop holding large taps?
I am holding a 2 1/2 in. X 12 tap in my hand so it is possible someone is holding a large metric.

If it was only the first thread?..And it was mine?
I would consider chasing it in my lathe....or. chamfering the first thread. (all depending on how many would be left & the function of said threads.

Plus-1 and/or use a small wire brush to clean up the first thread and 'follow' the thread from inside to the outer edge with the point of a medium-sized nail or something similar.

Thanks Guys!  I will folow your advice.  My thread file does not work, so I will attept the wire brush and medium point clean up.  I will also be more careful with the new bearing retainer.

Thread file wont do internal..

Try this, find a sharp tap of same pitch.. size, not important..
Now hold it tight in a tap holder, and pesent 1 flute to the threads, get the tap into the good part, and with leaning or light pressure work around the damage, trying not to take any off the good thread..
...good luck..

Great suggestion....I should have clarified , I have had good luck on big diameter internal threads with the tip of my thread files before.
But have had excellent results with your suggestion.

Dagersh, good luck & post your success.

Hey Guys, I followed 754's advice above.  It works fantastic!!!!  I matched the pitch with a nice sized Metric Tap.  I then carefully followed the internal thread inside the wheel hub.  I constantly checked my progress, and cleaned the threads with a brass brush and PB Blaster cleaned up with a rag.  I then would carefully thread in the retainer to check if there were any snags.  I kept this up until the retainer threaded all the way in smoothly.  YEAH BABY!!!!!!  I love this site, and you guys are the greatest!!!!!!!

Here is the result:

I need to do the exact same thing. Since I don't have a large selection of taps on hand, do you recall the pitch size you used?

Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
