Jetting a 400F, Manometers
« on: January 09, 2006, 06:21:16 PM »
I have a '76 400F with a full Kerker system and Uni foam pod filters.  I was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations for jetting this setup?  Currently I have 85 mains with stock air jets and stock (middle) needle position.  The bike runs acceptably, but it seems like its lean in the mid range.  Runs ok at WOT.  I suspect I ought to raise the needle one slot.  I have not yet balanced the carbs, so this may make a slight improvement.

In a related question, where have you guys found manometers, and at what price?  I'd rather not use mercury sticks.  Can vacuum manometers befound at a good price, or have you guys made your own?

I have a '75 400F currently going back together (very slowly!) and will soon need to calibrate mycarb bank.
I found a set of vacuum gauges on Ebay UK for (IIRC) just over UKĀ£30 (US$53) - there are four large face gauges, two short and two long brasstubes to fit the take-off points on the carbs, appropriate rubber tubing (connecting the brass tubes and the gauges, and tee-piece unions.  The kit was (of course!) made in Taiwan, but the instructions are all in good English - the whole thing is neat and appears easy to use - I'll let you know when I attack my carb bank!

However, I haven't seen a repeat of these on Ebay for some times, but it may be worth doing frequent checks in case they turn up again.

Here is a set of gauges avail. from J.C. Whitney, pretty reasonable.

Or there is Carbtune for a little more than double the same cost, but they are nice.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I bought a used set from a great fellow in the VJMC. Posting an ad in the wanted section on that site might also be an option. Make sure if you buy a set of guages that they have damper valves, or the needle will flutter around & not settle.
