old british punks would race their bikes from cafe to cafe or they would do a look around the city and try to make it back to the cafe they met at before the song was up.  this is my understanding from old timers and "research" alike.

They fad was established in 1959 (why 59 is inside a circle for the mark on leathers) and were called Rockers and loved Rockabilly music. The Cafe was the Famous Ace Cafe (http://www.ace-cafe-london.com/default.aspx) right of the A406 a British version of a limited access highway.

'59' is a club that started in 1959 by a local church, more or less. it's not when cafe bikes first came about.

i believe they often were galled 'YOBs' or yobbo short for youth of britain, and 'boy' spelled backwards depending on the story.

there was another popular term but i'm drawing a blank.

When you paint it on your tank, it reassures the owner that he actually has a cafe "racer".  It also helps you pick your bike out in a crowded parking lot.
You all wuill be pleased to know that Carpy's CAFE 750 (yes- the one that started it all!) is on ebay right now.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

Thanks Ecosse, I stand corrected. I didn't know of the origins but knew of the clubs involvement with the Rockers.
