I tried. Im going through craigslist for a resume/cover letter. the cover letter is what im talking about above. the attachment is too big. when I try and make it smaller, the words and signature get too distorted.

Your resume should be a word document or pdf, not an image.

The scan you are trying to send is larger than 10MB?

If you turn it into a lower resolution PDF, that should get the size down.

What format is the cover letter in?

Open Office can make word documents, and export as PDF.

If you don't microsoft works or office, download Open Office at

http://www.openoffice.org/

Retype your resume. Save as a word .doc.
Export as PDF if you feel like it, otherwise jsut send the .doc.

I would recommend doing what mlinder says if you don't want to spend money.

Retype your cover letter, it won't look that good as a scan then PDF.
