I have had it, seat interchangeability.

Ok, anyone have any idea what kind of seats can fit a 1977 CB550F? Previous owner put an awful seat on mine and doesn't have the factory one. Does anyone know if any of the 750 seats fit? My part number is 77200-390-780 and its discontinued, with some on ebay going for about 150-200 (a third the cost of my bike!) I'd really like to get something like the factory, just a flat piece of foam. A reproduction would be cool too provided it's not unreasonably priced.

I'd mainly like to know if other SOHC/4 models can fit because then I could take a look around salvage yards here and grab one off of there.
Thanks.

Yes, a 77f seat will. So will a 78f. The 75-76 might, too.

That's prolly about it. I mean, the K's will, but they might not fit against the tank correctly.
No.

For the 550 F any year from 75 through 77 will fit directly onto the bike.  There were no other 550 F models produced outside of those years.  Be aware that the 76 model is dark brown rather than black.

Just about any other SOHC4 tank will require some sort of mod to fit onto the 77 CB550F.

There's no 78f?

Are you looking for just the foam and seat cover or do you want the full seat pan? I have the factory seat from a '76 CB550K just sitting in my garage. The seat cover is cracked and ripped and there's no latch for the lock, but it's solid.

No 78 F in the US.  May have been in Europe. Only the 78 550 K in the US.

Will a 75 CB750 seat fit? I have one I'm looking to get rid of. It has a tear on the seam tho.

I have a 1970 CB350 SS, 1988 NT650(Hawk GT), 2004 BMW R1100S

You can make anything fit if you work it enough.
No 750 seats will fit on a 550 without strong will and modifications.

550K seat sort of fits.  That's what is on my '75 CB550F.  There are pics of another blue 550F around that clearly has a K seat on it.  Unfortunately, locate and acquire an F seat would be my suggestion but I am operating on the cheap too and just re-covered the K seat with an F cover(before I knew I had a K seat I ordered an F cover which came from Canada, it is expensive to return ship to Canada so I made it work).

At first I thought this was a snarkish response to my earlier post on 350/400 seats, which may have subtle differences.  I thought maybe this was some honda tech disgusted by a stupid amaturish question. Hey, I need something to pad me from the frame rails besides my gluteus.

That being said, I was going to post a pic of the seat I am planning to use at this point. It came on a Norton  hulk that is sitting around my friend's shop. I see similar things on ebay as a custom seat for who knows what else.  It is like a flat foam 2 x 6  with a widening at one end.   It's alot like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB350-CB-350-CB-350-Chopper-Black-Custom-Seat-NEW_W0QQitemZ190370116864QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item2c52f17500

After setting it in place forwards and backwards, I was thinking of cutting off some of the plank end and butting it up to the tank to make a single, which was the only way it could look anything less than stupid. Here it is tucked under the tank to simulate modification and installation.

Three of us  agreed that this modification would make it tolerable to look at.

Here's to on the cheap!  Maybe if there was a thread with people's measurements of pleated areas on different models it would be a good reference for adapting / stretching what they can get to what they've got.  Here is the place that has the $20 deal on good looking covers.
