clubmans, clip ons or euro bars...
« on: February 10, 2010, 06:21:15 AM »
hey guys.  i'm having some troubles deciding what bars i should run on my build.  i want to go with a cafe, and have it look as "vintage" as possible with some newer age things as well, so i don't know.

i currently have clubmans on there and while they look the part the best, they are a bit uncomfortable...  i've hear clip ons are a dang good alternative for comfort and performance, but they're expensive for the adjustable ones i've seen.  i saw some on here that had what looked like anodized gold fork clamps that were kind of hexagonal or octagonal in shape with good adjustments that were really simple.  i've also seen the tomaselli clip ons too, and they look pretty nice.

i also like the look of some lower rise super bike bars or super moto style bars.  i think the euro bars are kind of the same thing too?  well i was just wondering if you guys could post up some of your set ups and list the pros and cons of each.  i tried searching, but i couldn't find that one comparison i saw the other day between clubmans and clip ons...

thanks guys!!!

Honda's euro bars were much praised. They offer you that comfortable, slightly forward leaning position. So your bum does not have to carry all your weight and you can ride for hours on end. Best compromise IMO.

Your style should be consistent with your footpeg choice........flat or low-rise with standard pegs........adjustable clip-ons with set-back pegs and a low tank and seat. All components should be somewhat adjustable to allow for rider size.

i'll be using rear sets from an FZR-600 i got a junkyard.  i will be welding some tabs onto the frame and possibly mounting a plate with adjustable holes on it in case i need to tweak the position.  otherwise, i'll mount a simple tab on there to keep things clean in a position i find comfortable.  not too aggressive, but something good.  i'm about 6'3 or so, 36" inseam.  I'll be running an earlier model supersport tank on there, the one with the flip up gas lid covering the filler hole.

so i think i have it narrowed down to clip ons or the euro type bars.  i'm going to be running this on a GL front end, which makes finding nice clip ons in the 37mm diameter a bit of a hassle...  does anyone have any specs on the euro bars?  maybe so i can compare them to a renthal or another aftermarket bar??

Same boat so I'm interested to know what you decide - 6' 3", 36" inseam, GL1000 front end to swap.

I'm leaning in (ha) on the clipons and flattening out the top triple from the Goldwing. Currently running clubs on my bike and the clipons would raise the bars about 1.5 - 2 inches over their current position. If you're like me - monkey arms - it's not a stretch at all but a little rise would be nice.

The GL1000 top triple is pretty high so clubs might work pretty well but I really want to ditch the top triple and flatten out the profile so clipons are about the only choice.

Here's some links to what I'm looking at - not inexpensive but...

Tarrozi at Fast From the past - I think these are the ones

http://www.fastfromthepast.com/servlet/the-879/Clip-dsh-ons-37mm-offset%3D35mm/Detail

Not sure about these

http://www.fastfromthepast.com/servlet/the-854/Clip-dsh-ons-37mm-offset%3D105mm/Detail

Vortex 37mm

Woodcraft

And eBay has a ton of em - no risers though.

Anyways, hope that's helpful and I'm really interested in what you decide.

thanks iggy!!!  the ones i saw before aren't in the ones you posted, but i do like what you posted, good ideas!  it's hard to turn the clubmans down though, being that they were $15 and all!!  but they didn't feel to great on the wrists, and no i wasn't really stretched out, i'd just like a little more comfort on the wrists without sacrificing performance or looks!

looking at "Low Rise Clip-Ons" from Fast from the Past, I think i'm liking these more and more actually!

http://www.fastfromthepast.com/servlet/the-727/Clip-dsh-on-Low-Rise-Handlebars/Detail

They can be adjusted quite a bit, i esp like the angled adjustment so i can fine tune my wrist orientation, and they sit higher than most standard clip ons.

I am 6'4" and I race with the raised Tarozzis, works pretty well on track , could be a bit of pain on the street.

That said, I dont have rear sets on any of my street bikes, hate them for everyday rides or touring.

Actually, I have made "fwd sets" on my two old school GSXR to be more comfy.

From my experience, at your height, you should not ever place the bars lower than the top of the triple clamp,( unless you are a masochist  :)

Also, the forks will be up in the trees a bit - how much I don't know - so may be possible to run the clipons on top of the tree?

And if Turboguzzi says raised that's good enough for me  ;D

Since you mentioned Supers - here's my setup.
More or less the same rise as Euros but with less back-sweep.

doubt it, you'd have to raise the forks by some 40mm, it'll lower the front too much and make the steering too twitchy.

these i call mystery bars, almost shaped like clubmans, but flat. no drop at all. fairly comfortable riding position i would compare to drag bars...
they arent reversed clubmans! they are flat!!!  ;D

feel your pain..... stock peg position is very fwd, so I would go at least with a mild rear set that puts the pegs more or less near the swingarm pivot. Those R6 might out your feet very far back,

before you weld anything try mounting them with some simple clamps/bolts and seat on the bike, see how they feel.

oh ya for sure!  i wouldn't put any welds on the frame without everything else being sorted out that needed to be!  well the rear sets are going to be pretty easy to make work the way i want by just making the mounts work...

Super bike bars are the way to go, low enough to be sporty and you can ride hard with them and the most comfortable by a mile when compared to the other 2 you mention. I have ridden several 1000 mile days with the superbike bars and will always use them on my Hondas. Oh and i am also going to use them with rearsets with my build as well this time but the rearsets won't be as far back as they would be with clip ons..
