"American Choppers" Is Being Canceled!
« on: February 10, 2010, 07:26:46 AM »

In the beginning, I kinda liked the show, because of the different things and ideas. But, quickly got tired of the Fussing and Cussing. Then, the ideas weren.t as attractive and all.

"American Chopper" is No More: Final Episode to Air February 11th
Monday February 8, 2010
Orange County ChoppersIt seems all those arguments and legal back and forths have finally come to a head: American Chopper has been canceled, and the final episode will air on TLC this Thursday, February 11th at 9:00 pm (8:00 pm, central.) The show originally debuted on Discovery Channel in 2003.

A voiceover on a TLC promo mentions "...a year of change and challenge," suggesting the Teutul family just don't have it in 'em any more to take part in a reality television show. The cancellation could also signal-- at least in the eyes of mainstream America-- the final death throws of the custom chopper. What do you think?

(1) Bill Fabian says:

The one-off bike makers are all seeing the light at the end of the dark tunnel. where bike makers who have passed are calling them into the “light”. Thank goodness the Teutuls have taken on Schwinn Scooters as a side line at thier dealership.

(2) Steve says:

I will miss the American Chopper from a couple of years back. I will always dream of being able to create my own bike or trike that people stare at.
But I haven’t watched the show since the feud. It was not about the family as much as the creativity.
February 8, 2010 at 8:24 pm
(3) JJ says:

Or maybe the “American Viewer” got tired of “Pro wrestling meets motorcycles”. All that manufactured conflict is extremely tiresome over the long haul.
February 8, 2010 at 10:35 pm
(4) Scottie says:

For me, Thursday nights have always been an evening of thought free TV. Magnum PI, Cheers, Seinfeld, OC Choppers. VERY different shows, but all winding up the longest day of the week with some simple programming.

Hope they’ve paid for their new showroom in Newburgh. Not sure t-shirts and a weak economy upstate will cover a loan payment

(5) Dave says:

Methinks it was just a case of way too much money way too quick for way too little actual work…and they crashed and burned internally…skidding out of control on their slick-ass egos!
February 9, 2010 at 4:27 pm
(6) Owl Creek Observer says:

It did get boring after a while and I stopped watching. When I returned a few months ago, half the characters were gone.

But the same old week-after-week routine of Paul Jr. and Mikey showing up for work late, if at all, was the same as always. So were Sr’s temper tantrums, though as owner of the shop, I suppose he was entitled.

It’s been almost painful watching Paul Jr. trying to scratch out a living designing grills and dog toys, but I’m sure he’ll never have it as cushy as he did at OCC. It was especially painful watching Mikey come to the realization that he was all grown up and had no skills at all.

It’s definitely time for the whole family to move on.
February 9, 2010 at 6:08 pm
(7) James says:

I liked the show at the beginning, because I could identify with them. they built bikes the real world way;cut,weld,grind,heat-n-bend,naaah,that won’t work, toss it and start over. Reminded me of me,and all the people I know that build stuff. As the show went on,they build less and less of the components themselves, and have a million dollars worth of machinery to do the same jobs that used to be accomplished with a welder, drill press, torch and 4″ grinder. I’m sorry, but I won’t miss the show at all, because it stopped impressing me after the first season.
February 10, 2010 at 2:10 am
(8) Cammie Smith says:

How sad…but it comes as no surprise. Paul should take the blame for all of this…he took a group of young talented men and capitolized on their talent…let’s face it his “old school” bikes didn’t bring the fans back week after week.

This cancellation is long over due!!! Mikie is fresh out of rehab…Paul Jr. is in a crash and burn relationship…let’s face it the chick is using him…but this is just my opinion…only in America will we pay a monthly cable bill to watch a family suffering from verbal, mental and substance abuse. Funny thing if this family were my neighbors I would put my house up for sale.

I’m not a big Paul Sr. fan….and I don’t pretend to be….with that I have just one question….”who’s going to pay your mortage now?” I am guessing that girlfriend isn’t going to be around much longer either…let’s face it…you’re old….and your show got cancelled…why don’t you build a theme bike based upon that?

Blood is thicker than water and money is the root to all evil…get right with your boys all 3 of them! God will take care of the rest!

Started in 2003. Should have ended somewhere around mid 2004. I'd say that's when they jumped the shark. Haven't watched it in many years.

Same here. Surprised they didn't take each other out! ::)

Used to watch American Hot Rod for the same reasons, then some of the same stuff started happening (fussing and cussing) and that Stupid Foreman or what ever he was, didn't seem all that smart to me. I thought it was cool to watch the old cars get new life and looks. Had Mixed feelings about Boyd Coddington though. I'm sure he had quite a talent and deserves recognition as a Custom Car Builder, he just seemed to have "attitude" and I guess those who HAVE talent, have their drawbacks as well. :-\

The show was entertaining, but I just don't like the raked out choppers.  I cancelled my cable subscription a long time ago so I haven't seen it in a while, but the shows I watched were basically the same choppers being built every time.  It would have been nice to build a different style once in a while.

I even remember them building one for Jay Leno.  He asked them to not rake out the front end too much because it just wasn't his style.  I seem to recall the OCC guys really sweating over what to do about it, and eventually they raked out the front end anyway.   ::)

Yeah it was a good show when they actually MADE the parts and bikes by hand...and the show was about the bikes/build process. It then morphed into a show about the drama around the family and it got boring. Stopped watching a couple years after it came out...

Yeah, speaking of the bike built for Leno, I did see the one where they were to build one for Billy Joel and he had to keep telling them what he wanted, while they kept tryig to do it THEIR way! ::)

I met them years ago at bike meets when they were just arrogant Sh1tkickers, I went to their first "store" and they were still arrogant Sh1tkickers, saw them at the NY Bike show and spent time with Indian Larry a real bike builder. I have not gone to the store in Newburgh yet and probably won't. Maybe I will when it becomes a Costco or something.

Oh yeah, the bikes look lie crap in person. Paint jobs are mediocre at best. A bunch of rich folk around here are suing them since the bikes beak down and the frames develop cracks.

Really they weren't builders, but assemblers. They got a lot of the assemblies from others and bolted them together. Building is a different creature altogether.

At any rate, Good Riddance, I say! Funny how shows that I REALLY like, don't last very long AND the ones that aren't all that much, hang on forever. :-X

Yeah they were jerks the first time I met/saw them at the NYC show, I went over to the Indian Larry booth, talked to him for about an hour. He let me behind the "velvet rope" lol. Awesome guy, and some incredible details on his bikes...that was the year before he died I think?

I couldn't believe no one was checking his stuff out, but there was a crowd/line for the OCC crap. That's actually how I struck up the conversation with Indian Larry lol.

x2   I got tired of watchoing them assemble (not build) ugly f-ing bikes and yelling at each other after the first season.  I was waiting for the "tribute to mom" bike where, "to be honest wicha, we straped on the kitchen sink 'cause thats where she spends her time".  Spew.

I had to stop watching early on - aside from the mindless destruction of property every time they had an argument, I'd get wound up by their lack of skills with basic tools. It got me livid every time they botched something together.

I can't watch Build or Bust either - I think Russell Mitchell is awesome but that cigar smoking idiot on the production team who keeps winding up the guys doing the builds is just painful.

For my money the best reality chopper series was Southern Chopper - a sound bunch of guys who knew how to fabricate stuff properly, respect.

Yep, they had to do the drama, how exciting would it have been watching them build basically the same bike every week?

I enjoyed watching Jessie James build his bikes alot more than the OCC guys.  Jessie is an artist.  What with the fact that he has his own adjustable frame jig, english wheel, etc.  I wich he was on TV more often.

Agreed.  I also like Jesse's no-bull#$%* attitude.  I like the way he handled some of the A-holes on Monster Garage.  He basically told them to straighten up or get the eff out.  When I worked in the machine shops, I wish I had had a boss like him.

I gotta agree with about everyone here. The OCC shop is only about 45 minutes from home...never been there. Don't care for those stretched out high necked chopper looks either!

Mikey and Vinney were entertaining but I tired of the nonsense between Pauly and Sr.

Boyd Coddington just seemed like someone I would never work for.

Indian Larry and his bikes I liked...RIP.

I do like Overhaulin though! They do some nice work.

I could also watch Barrett Jackson Auctions for a very long time!

Really like to see pristine early iron!
