Earthquake in northern Illinois?
« on: February 10, 2010, 11:14:26 AM »
Yeah, this morning just before 4, I was awakened by a large "thud-boom" sound.  I thought it was a sonic boom that's how loud it was!  I woke up my wife, and she was oblivious to it.  I got out of bed to see if my son had fallen upstairs or something.  He was fine.  I turned on the scanner to hear the police being dispatched to a "burglary in progress, someone in the house" and to a "sound of a helicopter crash"!.  Earthquakes in northern Illinois are really rare, and from what I gather, the loud boom sounds are strange and not typical to earthquakes. I don't know about this since this is only my second earthquake I've ever experienced in my lifetime.  I never felt any shaking, but my daughter texted me at 4:30, and she said her house was shaking since she live about 8 miles from the epicenter and things were rattling.

I got home from work at 0200 and slept right through the sucker. My wife's friends were woken up though.

I didn't feel anything from this one but I did from the one in southern IL about two years ago.  I was on the 12th floor of a building in West Lafayette and the motion of the room woke me.

I remember when I went back to Illinois for a visit after settling in California. (I was born and raised in Illinois, btw)
The relatives (and other people within Illinois) were all telling me they could never live in a place that had earthquakes.

Pardon me while I snicker just a little bit.   ;D

We have two cockatiels (among other critters).  They are our earth quake detectors.  We've had a couple earth quakes in the last few years.  The birds panic and attempt "flight" inside their cage.  ...makes for lots of noise and sometimes bloody birds.  They made sure to wake me up at about 4am.  We felt it in NW Indiana.

That makes the second earthquake i have slept through!
I missed the last one a few years ago, again early morning too.

Although my neighbor  upstairs said she fell down the stairs last night around that time so maybe she caused it??  ::)

we get earthquakes here in south carolina as well from time to time, it's why thye drew the level of lake murray down so far a few years ago, to retrofit the dam for better earthquake protection.
