My 4 into 2 setup sounds kinda nice for a rookie builder.  Only about 6 inches of original headers before combining into 2 1/2" pipes that end just before the rear wheel.  My neighbors haven't complained yet about my synching and tuning outside in the evenings but I wouldn't try to get away with it at midnight.  Thinking about adding flared ends like a Trumpet to see how it sounds....
