Not a Honda but it is from Japan
« on: February 11, 2010, 07:49:04 PM »
Got a chance to pick up what I believe is a 73' Yamaha TX 650 for 600 bux.  The owner seems to think it is a '77 but I believe he is mistaken . I heard this was an awesomely strong engine. A friend has one and it sounds and looks beast. Strangest thing , it had a steering dampener on it for adjusting how fast the handle bars turn! Too cool!
Any trouble with these bikes? He said it needs a new battery so you have to kick start it now I think I am gonna bring a spare just to test it out .  Whadda you guys think?

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

From looking at the brochures I found at http://www.biker.net/flyers/650_ads.htm the 73's forks did appear longer, but it's probably an illusion of styling and they're all the same length in reality.

here's the pic of the 73 model from that link, they do look shorter than what you've got, but how does it ride?
If you're interested in shorter forks, a capable local machine shop can shorten them and thread the tops for the caps again for surprisingly little money.
(Also check out http://www.650motorcycles.com/ and http://www.mikesxs.net/ if you haven't already found them)
Cheers.

That bike I posted is a friends and indeed does have longer forks. He swapped them out for stock ones . For some reason the old timer he got it from dug on them .  The bike I am after is identical to this one but is listed inccurately. I have to conceal my sources as I have been snaked on a deal once already....

If and when I bring it home I will post it in the other bikes forum section .  It's starting to snow here, again.... >:( man , this is just not right for the south....

I'd buy it for $600.
