Anyone know/seen/heard of anyone running a HD front end on CB ?
« on: December 26, 2005, 02:51:54 PM »
Hello fellow CB'ers , Happy Holidays ;D

I think I am going to try and run a HD Wideglide front end on my CB, rather than a late model sportbike deal-e-o.
I just think , for the bobber look I am going after, a FAT front end, with a 140+ series tire, no front fender, and dual-disc brakes
will look killer with the little CB in follow...The bike is going to be less Cafe and more Bobber I think , and the HD front end
is def. the way to go...I think....

Anyone have any pics of this complete , in anything other than "CHOPPER" form ? From all the other posts about
swapping front ends out, it looks as all I need to do is press out the stock HD steering stem and replace it with the stem
from the CB, weld in some new steering stops, and I should be in the show. "Should" is the key word here people.. ::)
I spoke with LowRiderTommy , and he had nothing in the way of parts, just a set of HD trees.
Anyone know of a shop that sells the converted tree's allready done ? So I wouldn't have to press in anything ???
I can always find a deal with HD stuff , as some guy right now is selling a complete RoadKing front end for around $300.

As ususall , all help/comments/remarks/ and insults are appreciated.........

I think the mass of a wide glide front end, without a big V-twin following it might be over powering. Have you thought of a set of Sportster or Springer forks?

I am not in the hunt for speed with this bike , so if the thing is a bit underpowered due to the
larger front end, I will not be too worried. I am in the hunt more for looks with this project more than
anything.

A springer would be shweet, but I will prob. stay away just due to the cost. I am sure I can pickup a wideglide
frontend for about 1/2 the cost of a springer. Damn those Discovery channel shows !

that's a cool bike to model after, pro teal. i'm not much of a HD fan. actually i figured out that i'm not much of an 'anything after 1979' fan, but that also includes some silly looking earlier harleys. there are exceptions, of course...the new bonneville looks great (but then again, it's modeled after the old ones), the monsters look cool, and well---royal enfield hasn't really changed a bit anyway. a guy here in oregon apparently bought the rights to norton, and is going to start reproducing them at $20K a pop. ouch. but i digress..
at some point, i figured out that i've always just liked the racing style, which at one point included many hardtail bikes. that HD in the picture looks simple and not too flashy, and not all raked out---how a hard tail should look in my opinion.

good luck with your build. i'd love to see pictures when you make it work.

I actually just got an email from Ken, the owner of WWW.CYCLEXCHANGE.NET
He said his shop is in process of making a set of tree's that will bolt right up to a stock
Honda neck , and allow the use of HD wideglide tubes, and the rest of the front end !

How perfect is that ?
So , Now I need to start looking for a "donor" front end, and get the trees when they are available.

PAULAGES----->
I dig what you are saying about newer bikes. They lack any kind of style. I used to work at a high profile American V-Twin shop, which will remain nameless due to a class-action lawsuit I am involved in , but all of the $30k plus bikes looked the same, just different paintjobs.. The bike in the pic above is the def. , in my opinion , of a true bobber. The only thing I would add would be a shock type seat, and dual discs..

consumer society=no class.

but then again, supposedly the cb350T was the highest production motorcycle in american history and it's got a bit of class...

that's why I picked the gsxr front-end...It's almost 12 inchs wide...and short...I'm running a 120 x16 tire... I got my front -end for$200...trees,tubes,axle.handlebars,brake calipers...I just swapped steering stems...
oh yea..gl1000 fronts are 11inchs wide and will bolt right up with dual disc

My point about "mass" was looks, not speed. I think the front would look too "heavy". Maybe I am just not a fan of Wide Glide forks, but I think I would Photoshop it before going ahead.

Ignore the TV shows. I notice the "Fushion" chopper company offers "free transportation" for a year. I think that is marketing code for "you can't ride it". When I was a kid, I had one raked about as much as the "Captain America" bike. I may be exaggerating slightly, but it seemed like I needed four traffic lanes to turn around. the picture isn't my bike. That is a currently available "Captain America" replica, $28,000.00

FAUST---->
I will do a Photoshop deal of my bike with a Roadking front end before I actually shell out the cash
for the parts. My cash + photoshop = a good thing. It has saved me bigtime with my past car projects
from making huge mistakes..I am thinking about using a Roadking front end because they are all dual-disc from the
factory, and I like the look of the fat forks. Could always go with a reg' old wideglide front-end as well, to reduce some
"visual mass".
CD811--------------------->
The only reason I am not doing a newer sportbike front-end is becasue of the wheels. I have a long hatread of tri-spoke
mag wheels, weather it be on cars, trucks, or motorcycles. I am leaning towards the HD front-end so I can maintain a beefy tire
with a spoke rim.

So, are you using an aftermarket hardtail like the picture, or the stock Honda frame?  I guess photoshop is good.  I have no problem with a beefy front end, but I can't imagine it on the stock Honda.  When you do a mock-up, please post it.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

FAUST---->
I don't plan on adding any rake to this front-end project. I am a big fan of stock dimensions ona bike, especially a
bobber type of bike. Hopefully when CycleX makes their tree's , they dont rake them...

UNCLE ERNIE---->
I am going to use the stock frame , and keep it a softail. Untill I get my other bike "on the road" , the CB is the only
bike I have to ride. Hardtail's are for the birds if it is your main bike , especially with te great Chicago streets ::) The hardtail bike
in the pic above is something I plan on re-creating on another build in the future, just looking to it for some vision on the CB...

I am thinking now about doing a Fatboy front end , with Roadking lower legs , thus I can have a tight dual-disc setup.
I just need to wait and see how much $$$ the Cycle X trees are gonna run.

As for posting pics , I plan on taking step-by-step pics of the whole process...

with the sportbike front-end you could easily still run a fat spoke wheel :D
