i've seen a few vintage sansui amps at a local hi-fi shop here, i swear they weigh about as much as a small person! i imagine the sound is amazing though.

The weight comes from the power transformers. It pushes the Bass. Today they use a transistorized power supply. They are lighter and sound like crap without a sub woofer.

A lot of Sansui gear was sold at Military PXes along with Akai tape decks.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

Sometimes I love the little thrift store here in town. Yesterday I picked up a pair of Boston Acoustics HD9 speakers for $4. The surrounds on the passive radiators need to be replaced but that's it. I've already ordered them...$22. They'll be great in the kitchen area or I might flip them for a quick little profit. In the past couple of months I've found a Rotel RX-303 receiver, a Luxman DC-113 cartridge CD player, and a Pioneer CT-F900 cassette player there. None of them cost more than $8. Over the years I've managed to build up a nice little stockpile of audio equipment...I think the disease is closely related to the Honda CB affliction.  ;D ;D

I agree! I have a stack of old stereo gear that I've accumulated, mostly from our dump. Dyna, Macintosh, Scott tube stuff, as well as some old Hafler and Japanese solid state things. I mostly use my computer to run powered speakers through a mixer in the house that allows varying the relative volume in different rooms, but i do have a couple of other rooms that run analog through some archaic and very good sounding equipment. I'm not sure thinking about it that it's a disease, but what's not to like about either bikes or music?

I have Harmon Kardon Citations I, II (Still in pieces waiting to be rebuilt- litz wire is a bastard to tin  :() III and IV.

The II sounded awesome before I started tearing into it to change electrolytic caps out and premium caps in filter circuits. I could kick myself for doing that now 'cause I am too lazy to get it back together.  :(

I should have gotten back to work on that with my time off but I would need a variac now to get the electrolytic caps up to operating voltages now due to storage.

Yeah, my Citation II weighs about 65 lbs., 60 watts per channel in pentode ultralinear mode- so that's about 1 lb. per watt, sounds about right.  :)

Anytime Mike, open every day except Sunday and Monday 8 am-4pm. Nowadays though there are people who hang down there and sell the stuff they get full time. My sister in law fights them for stuff, but it's not as easy as it used to be.
I keep a couple of cold ones in the fridge for you though.

for now, my 18 year old Sony a/v reciever with 70 watts rms pushes the speakers i have just fine, plenty of thump and the highs are nice too. someday if i ever have the money i'll look for a pair of bose 601, series II or III speakers and a pair of big amps.

You would be better off with a pair of Advents or AR's.
