Hmm, it does not have round raised portion by the stem nut, but 550s do!.. could be 160 or 175 ?

To anwer how they work..the tube has a threaded in top, this past the threads has a reduced diameter or snout.. that fits into the tree, but stays below top of hole. The chrome nut, draws it all tight.. used on many bikes.. WideGlides use it too.. to mention another example.

Honda forks in the 60s were a lot different, if you want extended tubes on say the CL shown, your springs would be on the outside of the fork, and a chrome collar clamps to tube to hold spring.. unless you run extended covers...

... things were different back then..

thanks for the info

now that I see the pics I remember seeing that set up.

Checked a 175 partsbook today..

if the technical illustrator was true to life, the 175 clearly shoed a round raised boss...

I don't think it's a CL175 upper tree-
at least not this year.

everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

Looks like this is solved, but I'd like to add that early 450s (after the Bomber) had the same setup. Here's a parts breakdown on a K1 (a'69, I believe?)
