Had To Tell You About My New Honda....
« on: February 16, 2010, 08:38:13 AM »
Here she is, a 1970 CB450 K1 Super Sports (aka Black Bomber). Almost finished - just waiting for some parts to arrive from America to complete her. These include the correct front mudguard (fender), NOS Speedo & Tacho, period shock absorbers and a smart front number plate.

She runs superbly apart from those shocking brakes LOL.

Wherever she goes, she attracts LOADS of attention. She's so damned fine! LOL

I'll post more pix when the mods are completed.

Thanks for looking.

Looks to me like you have some sort of non-US K1.
But it doesn't have typical Euro-style fenders, as shown in the photo below, and the taillight and turn signals are not what we usually see on a Euro K1......
The "Bomber" term is usually reserved for K-0's, or the 4-speeds with "toaster" tanks.

If it were a US model, we'd say it was a K1 (1968) with K2 air cleaner covers and a 4-speed starter, but there's a lot of variation in non-US models.
What's the frame number???

Your bike is a beauty - I think a black K1 is one of the most beautiful bikes ever made.

Thank you for your very kind comments. I agree TBP that the K0 is the one which was formally known as the Black Bomber, but over here it has generally been decided that the K1 should be known as a BB too. In Europe, they stp calling them a BB when they lose the chromed steel tank panels.

The indicators on mine are common Honda pattern parts but they don't look too different to the ones in the brochure of the time....

Hi,

In Europe a black bomber is the CB450 with the 4-speed transmission, build from 1965 to 1968. Everything else is not a black bomber. But, your late K1 is very nice too, and you a have a 5-speed gearbox, and that's more practical. The breaking of these CB450 is good, but then everything has to be right. A good adjusted double leading shoe break, as used on the black bomber works better than a average CB350f / CB400f disk break.

Hi Mick, I no longer have the CB750 or 400/4 - I sold them.  As for Glasson Dock, I was there last weekend on the CB450. It was BITTER COLD so there weren't many bikers around unfortunately. The caravan season starts in March, so I'll be calling at Glasson virtually every weekend (we have a static caravan at nearby Scorton). Hope to see you!

Well actually Jensen, I don't think the name Black Bomber was anything other than something made up by the motoring journalists of the time. As far as I'm aware, there was never any such designation assigned to the vehicle by Honda. And here in the UK, the vast majority of people still refer to any CB450 with chromed tank panels as a Black Bomber. It makes no odds to me - it's just a CB450 K1 Super Sports.

Hi,

At least in the Netherlands and Germany a BB is the four speed, but it was never an official name.
This CB450 is a late K1, the early K1's had the same front fork as the BB.

Of course I'm biased, but the Black Bomber was only offered in Black. The K1 shown above was offered in more colors, so it couldn't have fit into the BB clan. It is a beautiful bike, but as said the BB is strictly the 1965~1967 CB450K0 with 4 speeds, 4 screws on the clutch cover, single-unit speedo/tach, and painted fenders.

That is a really nice bike - regardless of her age :)

haha, people get weird when you start applying made up, romanticized names to bikes. Honda never made a Black Bomber, and the designation is abiguous. I always thought of chrome tank 450's as falling under that banner. If I wanted I could start calling all K0 CB550's Ding Dong Sallies. Which I am now going to do.  ;D

Hi,

A lot of motorcycles have an unofficial name, some are logical, some not.  Honda CB72 is named hawk in the US, his bigger brother (CB77) is named superhawk. The CB750 K0 is called sandcast.

Is a CB72 also a sohc, but with four valves instead of four pistons ? In fact the CB72 has two different cams, so its a dohc4 ?
The CB400 cylinder head is also partly sandcast, can it be named sandcast too ?
In fact all above engines cases are moulded in the same way (except the CB400 cases), why is the CB750 k0 called sand cast then ?

something to think about,

Jensen

Trevor - I just spent God knows how long reading through your Road Trip Blog. Excellent story, great photos. Loved it! What a damned shame Jordan had to pull out.

Awesome, thanks a lot. The report is only about half way done, I did make it back to Arkansas. Certainly feld bad for Jordan, but I had an amazing trip, probably the best experience of my life. And I didn't have a single problem from my ole Ding Dong Sally on the whole trip  ;D  ;D

So get it finished man! I love road-trip stories. I recently went over to Ireland (Dublin) and then headed South, following the coast until I got all the way around. Brilliant trip, but I didn't really "log" it. I've done Scotland a few times and intend touring Wales sometime soon.

If you ever get tired of looooooong, straight US roads, come over to England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales. You'll be bowled over! And what a trip that would be for your blog.
