CB750 Neutral Shift
« on: April 20, 2010, 07:29:34 AM »
CB750 does not like shifting to neutral with engine running- goes directly to 2nd from 1st and takes a bit of force. With the engine not running it shifts very easily to neutral from either gear. Is this typical for the 750?

No, that's not typical.  Sounds like you need to adjust the clutch.

+1 adjust the clutch lifter and the two cable adjusters as per the manual.  If that doesn't cure it, it could be warped clutch plates, or a bent or worn shift fork.

Also, all of my bikes shift much easier with fresh oil.  Old oil isn't going to cause that problem, but it will make it worse.

Thanks, the clutch adjustment seemed to help a bit. As a follow on, how much travel should there be at the clutch lever between disengage and engagement. Mine seems to be a fairly small window and it's toward the lever being fully released- seems like the clutch does not engage till the lever is almost fully released.

My issue has been resolved.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=68841.msg761025#msg761025

Main problem- Thrust washer was installed in wrong order under clutch hub nut.
Contributing problem- One out of spec (warped) steel plate.

I adjusted the clutch lifter using the correct procedure outlined in the manual as well as the cable adjuster by the cover as well as on the handlebar.

Clutch friction zone closer to the fully released position is normal.

Clutch free play spec is 10-20mm at lever.

Thanks Mystic!
