With the spark plugs out let the motor turn over for awhile to work some of that fresh oil you put in work its way around.

And pull a few tappet covers to look for signs of fresh oil up top.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

but dont use electric start.... kick it slowly till you know the oil is pumping!

In addition put some Marvel or any thin oil for that matter down the plug holes and let it sit as long as you can. This way you are not getting a dry start.

I think some Seafoam on the keyboard will fix that up. ;)

sorry about that guys i was using the computer at work and the caps has to be on for the adp program to work so i can log on to my next job.i work at a dodge dealership in the shop.anyways back to the original topic after installing the newer rocker cover off of the 78 cb550 i put a bit of oil down each tappet hole so that when i initially turned it over it was not dry and i have been kicking it over after putting fresh oil  and gas in it to get things somewhat going.just crossing my fingers i don't screw this one up.i did a dry compression test on it when i first got it and got descent compression since i don't know how long it was sitting out in the yard.it had no points cover on it so there was some rust that i cleaned up on the points and then i took the advancer and got the cob webs off and lubed her up so that after it was twisted it snapped back. i'm going outside and give the old girl a try and see what i get keeping my fingers crossed. just 1 lasst question though if i do get it running should i just let it run at an idle to allow parts to get back in to  working mode? how long should i wait before really throttling it up and seeing how things run at higher rpms?

Once it's warmed up and you know you have oil flow to the valvetrain... gently rev it to 2 or 3 thousand rpm, I wouldn't rev it too much without riding it.

Did you have any luck?

If the motor was sitting for a long time you need change the oil filter and drop the pan and clean out the sludge and make sure the screen is clear before you start it.

Good point there, does that engne have a chain oiler that you'd want to turn off too?
