Odd thing with my battery?
« on: February 17, 2010, 11:26:24 AM »
I didn't drive my CB for over a month. I put the trickle charger on, and left for vacation. When I got back, the battery was pretty much dead. I looked at the fluid levels, and saw that one (only one) cell was at half level. Any ideas on what could have done this? It is a relatively new battery, bought about 3~4 months ago from Walmart. So, I topped off the battery and put it back on the charger. It won't hold a voltage beyond 12v. I am thinking the battery is gone.

Your tricklecharger is one of the many that are not what they promise and has in fact overcharged your battery. My advice: just charge your battery once a month and then disconnect till the next time. There's no need to charge your battery when it reads  12,5 V or more. Just wasting energy.

It would better not to use a trickle charger because it's always charging the battery but a Battery Tender type of charger. This is a low output charger with a microprocessor that will sense when the battery needs charging, charges it to a full load then goes into a maintenance mode, not charging but monitoring the level of charge. There are many types of these but Battery Tender is probably the most recognized name  http://www.batterytender.com/  I have one plugged into my Goldwing all the time and also use it to top up the batteries in my 750's.

Thanks for your inputs guys. So, do you think the battery is recoverable?

I wouldn't trust it until it proves itself.  Even more so in cold weather.

If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?

Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
