Trip Photos Posted (Blue Ridge / Atlanta-Boston)
« on: January 11, 2006, 01:50:31 PM »
Just posted photos from my trip from Atlanta to Boston on my 900CR.  My friend Alan rode down from DC on his Monster to join me for the ride through the Dragon and up the Blue Ridge Parkway.  On-site comments welcome; photo album at:

If you want to see how far a CB can go, check out photos from my 12,000 mile odyssey on a '72 CB750 on the site at:

Nice pics! I took long weekend trip on my 750 from Mich. to the Blue Ridge Mtns and back about 25 years ago. I know exactly what you're talking about regarding the changeable weather!

A blown fuse in 12000 miles - not bad for a 30 year old cycle. Did you make any special preps before your departure? And whats the CB doing these days while you are riding your Ducati?

Kevin,

No special preparation apart from the regular maintenance.  I made sure that everything was tuned before I started, and carried a full maintenance kit throughout.  Changed the oil every 2,000 miles and checked the valves every 3,000.  The only other real problem I had was a disintegrated starter button and a somewhat leaky tranny gasket replaced in Los Angeles.

The CB is currently residing in Atlanta, and I ride it whenever I am down South, usually two or three times a year.  It is currently at 43,000 miles, and has plenty left to go!

machine - I already have motorcycle fever, and I am also coming down with a travel bug. I'm pretty sure my arse is no good for 300

miles per day anymore, and I'm still stretching this CB out to see what it will do. It's hard for me to imagine leaving my ride behind

for a new (insert 2nd most favorite bike here).

My one-day record on the CB750 is 617 miles, starting in Craters of the Moon Nat'l Park, Idaho, and finishing in Bend, Oregon.  You have to keep in mind that 150 miles of that was Idaho 42, which is the route through the Sawtooth Range, so I think I could definitely hit 1,000 if I really put my mind to it.  I've also done a number of one-day Atlanta-Washington trips, but that is only 535 miles.

Has anybody here done a bona fide, verified Iron Butt on their CB?

What's an iron butt? I've just a little 350f. I Wonder how far it would go.

The Iron Butt Association certifies a number of long-distance rides, including a 48 state/10-day ride, and a coast-to-coast 50 hour ride.  The entry level certificate covers 1000 miles in 24 hours.  I was thinking about tackling one of these on the CB750 next time I am down in Atlanta, and was wondering if anybody on the board has done one.

I don't think Iron Butt was around in 1971 when I went from Salida, CO to St. Louis in about 18 hrs. on this CB. Mapquest says

thats good for 937.4  miles, and that's my longest ride. Oh well, I missed my chance for fame and glory by 62.6 miles. My travel

buddy was riding a CB350 twin.

Enjoyed the pics....

At my age, I think the Iron Butt challenge
would be a bit much. ::)  I am thinking of
a ride from Orlando to Key West....about
400 miles.  I have friends in Ft. Licquordale
which is about half way to break up the ride.

I was sorely tempted to bid on the '70 K0 that
went for $4,100 on ebay today.  Same color as
mine.   That should turn some heads...having
two K0's show up.   ;D

.....plus I need another one to lavish attention
and dollars on.  :o

I was watching that K0 on eBay too -- I was a little surprised it went for $4K given the exorbitant prices that these bikes have been commanding lately.  Looks like you just needed to remove the vintage Vetter and do some tune-up to get yourself a nice running K0.

Cool photos and nice trip.

Ive done something similar.... In Sept 2001 I set off from Boston - San Francisco on my CB750K4 and passed through the Craters of the Moon Natl Park as well (windy roads around there!). Id come down from Yellowstone via Jackson Hole (Tetons are a great site) and I headed south to Nevada though. Took me 15 days to get across country (I made a detour to Lassen Volcanic Natl Park and then over to Eureka,CA before going down Rt1 to SF (4100 miles). After this it was onwards to San Diego, into Baja, down to La Paz, over to Mazatlan, up the Devils Highway to Durango, and then down the Central Highlands, heading over to Aculpulco, up to Oaxaca and Chiapas region, to Palenque, Tulum/Cancun, before heading back to Boston via Alabama and South Carolina....2 month trip, 16,000 miles.

Then in 2003 I took the same bike over the Uk, then Holland, Germany, Alps (Swiss, Italian, Austrian) and over to Czech Republic before heading home via Hamburg and Amsterdam (6500 miles, 3 weeks)...

Finally in 2004, on the same bike shipped it over to LA (from Boston) and rode back with a few other SOHC guys in the Easy Rider Trip (www.easyridertrip.de) to New Orleand and finally back to Boston (5500 miles, 16 days).

...bikes still going strong at 63,000 miles....somethings you just cant leave behind :-)

Cheers
Andy in Boston

.bike is now in my garage in Boston...62,000 miles and going strong.....somethings you just cant leave behind :-)

Wow, Andy!  That's an incredible series of trips.  Did you have any major mechanical trouble along the way?

I am actually located in Boston as well.  We should go for a ride when the weather finally warms up.

Hey thanks although I think your trips are just as impressive -basically anyone who can ride thousands of miles on a CB750 or any other bike is doiing something right in my opinion :-).

Anyway Im in Roslindale (have a garage with 3 CB750s -2 K4s and one K2 thats getting the cafe rebuild treatment -see current pics but note the tank is just for show -its not attached and Ill be usiing another repainted tank)) -feel free to drop by anytime. I work in Longwood Medical Area. There are a few of us SOHC guys in Boston and surrounding areas and I was wrenching with a few yesterday out in Ashland (see Steves bikes at www.hondarestoration.com)....we also have a local meetup about once a month for beers and bike chat - see yahoo group - bostonareasohc4riders run by Chris.

And yes Im always keen to go for a ride so let me know when and where (at least once the snows gone).

Cheers
