To clear-coat the valve cover, or not?
« on: February 19, 2010, 04:57:34 PM »
Spent hours shining up my valve cover!!  Are you guys re-applying a clear coat, or skipping it? Some people think it turns yellow too soon. Or just keep shining it up by hand? Thanks

Clear does yellow. Once you have things shined up, it takes a few minutes a couple of times a year with something like Mothers to keep them up. You run into trouble when people let the pitting start.

I believe that there is a high temp clear coat, but as BobbyR said and I totally agree, no reason to. I clean mine about twice a year with flitz polish (I do ride this bike) and have neve felt a need to clear coat any of my aluminum.

Thanks guys, I'm pretty sure I'm going to leave them un-coated. But I have noticed it's been 2 years since my '66 Superhawk resto, and the fins are starting to corrode a bit, and they're tough to get completely mint again (I bead blasted them). I think the old Superhawks had a coating on them too, but no one seemed to be re-doing them either. So, just trying to get a concensus here.. Seems like I'm going to paint the head and cylinder though, most seem to agree that they were painted. There quite a split on what to use there though, some guys liking the VHT and others, the Duplicolor. I'll figure that out later..Thanks, John.
