Oil cooler . Should I have some bypass ?
« on: February 18, 2010, 07:03:38 PM »
I'm in the process of installing an oil cooler on my 836 . All the fittings are an-6 . That's the biggest fitting I could fit into the filter adapter .
I bought the adapter from Cycle X . It can be used to convert to a spin on filter with or without a cooler by installing plugs . Should I drill out one of the three 3/8" plugs ? If so how big ? I think that the stock housing and passages are flowing more oil then the -6 fittings can without some bypass .
Thanks
Mike

G'Day Mike, I presume that the 3 allen screws need to be removed when you plug the hose fitting holes so that the oil will flow into your screw on filter? Don't plug them without removing those screws, or you'll just block your oil flow to the filter and back into the engine, so be careful. Cheers, Terry. ;D

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I'm using a cooler so the three allen screws stay in place . Oil will come in the back of the plate , up to the cooler then back to the front of the plate ,through the filter then down the center to the engine . I'm just wondering if the
-6 fittings (1/4" -5/16" dia ) are going to flow enough oil for the engine .
Thanks Terry

Yeah mate, they'll be fine. If you're going to ride in colder weather, buy a Lockhart thermostatically controlled bypass between your adapter and cooler, that way you can leave your cooler hooked up all year round. Cheers, Terry. ;D

if you wanted a little bypass couldnt you just leave out one of those screws?
also i have that same adapter and had a problem with those plug screws not sitting flush when installed so when you go to install the adapter on the bike the large double ended piece that holds the adapter to the bike rides on the tops of the plugs and not flat on the inside surface of the adapter (hope that made sense)
i ended up having to tap the holes a little deeper (npt) so the plugs will sit flush
did you have that same problem?
Funny thing about regret is...... its better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done.

G'Day mate, over here, you can only find Lockhart cooler stuff in Harley shops, so you could ask them there, but I just bought a couple on EBay? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Nokrome : I had to do the same thing with my adapter to get the bolt to sit flush . Good thing we had the right tap handy  ::) I thought about drilling the center of one of the plugs with a 3/16" bit . I think pulling one plug altogether would be too much . I'll try with no hole for now .

I will add a thermostat when I can afford it . I like the first one . It always has a little flow though the cooler . Just enough to keep things fresh in there .
