New cb400f owner with questions
« on: February 17, 2010, 05:01:12 PM »
hey guys im new to the forum, and i recently bought a 1975 400f. i have had many old bikes before but never a 400f. it is in pretty rough condition and i want to keep it mostly stock with some performance upgrades. I have been looking for tires and all i could find are continental's in the stock dimensions. 90/90-18(F) 100/90-18(R) if im correct? Curious to know what set up's you guys are running. Also i want to find a performace exhuast. can you get a 4-4 exhaust like the rc162 race bikes? i would really appreciate any help with tires and finding a nice exhaust.
thanks

Kyle,

You might want to use the search feature.  The 350F and 400F are virtually identical bikes outside of the engine and body.  There are a few other differences, but they aren't relevant to your questions here.  Check out the recent discussions on 350F tires, and you'll get all you need to know for your 400F.

The exhaust is a different story.  A 4-4 system is going to be hard to find, and VERY expensive.  The closest one I know of is a 350F 4-4, but that will set you back $1500 or so.  I suggest sticking with the 4-1.  Mac makes a decent one, you can find a race one at 400fourstore.com, and Kerker had some nice units.  I have a Kerker 4-1 that I'll be swapping onto my bike soon.  It weighs much less than the stock unit, and definitely less than any 4-1.

If you want immediate power improvement, then adjust your valves, clean your carb, and set your timing.  Those engines actually make decent power.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Welcome smokerider,

Your exhaust looks in good shape, I'd keep it for now and concentrate on other "rough" items.

That looks good. Not rough. Start cleaning and shining and it will look great. Give it a total tuneup and go from there. As you search e-bay while tuning it up youll find eventually the exhaust you want. Looking at the guages I see no rust around the nuts. Was it kept garaged all its life?
