modern classic honda
« on: February 19, 2010, 09:02:27 AM »
i wish honda would come out with a modern classic for the cb750 like triumph has with the bonneville line. Since the 750/4 was such a pivotal bike, it seems only right that they would do something to honor it. i would possibly buy one.

just a thought.

I am most likely biased, but my Vintage Triumph is a much sweeter ride than the re-issued version.  If Honda did jump on the vintage bandwagon, I'd hope they don't just match the classic style.
It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.

The problem with Honda and any other Japanese maker is they will ALWAYS use DOHC's.

The SOHC was a less powerful bike compared to today, yes, but it's that look and combination of power, style, and feel that made the bike what it is. Don't forget the SOUND!!!

Call me stupid but I want them to make an updated verion of the SOHC motor. ;D

Wouldn't that be cool though? A modern watercooled SOHC4. Something like 200hp. I'm envisioning a single bank of the Ford Cammer motor.  :D

I went to the International Bike show in Minneapolis hoping Honda might have brought one to show but sadly no such luck :(. Had a little chat with a rep and was basically told it was designed as a streetfighter for overseas and that us Yanks wouldn't appreciate it. Like I really want to be a owner of a cookie cutter V-twin.

New VFR motor is single-cam, with an innovative cam follower mechanism that still allows four valves per cylinder.  Cool stuff, but I'll wait for version 2.0 considering Honda's track record with new valvetrain configurations, especially with the V4s.

It's funny.... I went to the Chicago show and talked to everyone one that showed up.
Many manufacturers were missing. I was disappointed. No KTM, Victory had 5 bikes!!, no Ural, no Aprilia, no Truimph, no MV!!
Royal Enfield and Hyosung were there though. Both of them in force. For the $$ they were the best alternatives.

Anyway....

XR1200R - CBR1000 or whatever it's called - Z1000 - B.King

Almost all of them were originally introduced in the European market. Take HD for example. The XR1200R is a direct descendant of the XR750. And what does the XR750 represent? Flat Track Racing. An almost exclusively American dominated sport. So why on earth introduce it for European markets only?!?!?!

Problem is.... we #$%* amd moan when a bike isn't for us. And when the company finally bends to our will, we don't buy.

I feel that if they want more market share, Honda should have made a CB750A instead of that hideous DN-01. Then people could ride a "motorcycle" without the hassle of shifting.

I absolutely love the new CB1100.  I am aware that naked bikes like the 599 and 999 were bad sellers, and that Americans don't generally buy naked bikes (you know, the kind you can actually use).
But, I honestly do think the new 1100 would sell here.  Triumph Bonnevilles are great sellers, there's the new Guzzi V7, Royal Enfield sales have improved steadily.  I think a retro HONDA would be just the ticket for a lot of people.  After all, Honda sold half a million CB750s back in the day.  Surely some of those older folks who had or always wanted one would buy one now, just as so many owners and would-be owners of Triumphs have bought the new version of the Bonny.  BTW, Triumph was one of the only manufacturers that actually made a profit last year!
Not to mention the people like me who, if we were to buy a new bike, would have a hard time choosing among today's overcomplicated, oversized, overstyled monstrosities.  Not everyone wants a goofy cruiser or sport bike.  Some of us want a simple, clean, reliable ride.
So let's have it American Honda!  We want this bike!!

What markets are they available in?  I wonder what the cost would be to gray market import one would be?  Maybe a member in another part of the world who has deep pockets would be interested in bringing a few to the states?  The profit margin on that one could be pretty big.
